Teacher Spotlight - Preschool
Throughout the year on Yoga Thursdays, the preschool students have been learning about yoga. Mrs. Robbin, Mrs. Moliere, and Ms. Andersen modeled a series of movement poses to support breathing, relaxation, stretching, and balancing. First, the students started out in a pretzel position sitting on the floor with legs crossed. They practiced balloon breathing and relaxed their hands by rubbing them together and shaking them. Next, they relaxed their shoulders by rolling them in circles. Then, Mrs. Robbins led them through a series of poses. In each of the poses the students practiced the action of something in the world. For example, they did poses that mimic a cat, a cow, a rock, a puppy, a tree, an elephant, a rocket ship, the sun, and a starfish. For a final relaxation, they complete their yoga practice with a moment of Shavasana which is a pose that has the students lie down and calm their minds. The teachers placed a small duck on the forehead on each child to help them stay focused and relaxed.
Yoga has many benefits for people of all ages but especially has benefits for young children! The breathing and movement exercises help children manage their anxiety and improve emotional regulation. Going through a variety of yoga poses helps children learn about their bodies and the movements they’re capable of doing. Yoga can reduce challenging behaviors in the classroom by providing a physical outlet for children to express themselves. The preschool students certainly looked more relaxed and focused after completing their yoga routine!
