A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
Happy Friday I hope you had a great week! We have had fun celebrating and recognizing National Hispanic Heritage month! Please ask your child(ren) to share some of the information shared on the morning announcements.
During our Meet and Greets, we discussed our Blueprint for the Future. We have also placed the link in some of our Cub Corners. You will continuously find the Blueprint Link below as well as our specific Woodward Mill Goals. We will use these goals to plan and measure our outcomes, both in how we provide guidance in the terms of being supportive in our community and in academics. Please take a moment and read through them as they are part of our Local School Improvement Plan. Thanks for your support and we partner together to provide the best education possible for our students.
Please continue to check our school calendar for updates. Please see Ms. Hardin, PTA President to volunteer for upcoming events. Bear Scare is right around the corner!
Best Regards and have a great weekend!
Dr. Sonya Brown

Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we will focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of September is “Responsibility”. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during September to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
September is Attendance Awareness Month
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. When students are not at school, they are missing valuable instructional time.
Here are some things you as a parent can do to help improve your child’s attendance:
Talk with your child about what happened at school each day. The more interested in school you are, the more they will be!
Set a bedtime and morning routine so that your child is well-rested and ready for school.
Wait to take family trips until school holidays or summer break.
Spotlight on Hispanic Authors & Illustrators
Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle
A talented young girl with a passion for drumming dreams of playing music in this upbeat story based on the life of Cuban musician Millo Castro Zaldarriaga. Told repeatedly that girls cannot be drummers, she refuses to give up, practicing in secret and delighting in every bit of music around her. A visit to a music teacher results in lessons and, eventually, the opportunity to perform in public. Vibrant, warm, and hopeful, this story shows the power of perseverance and importance of following your dreams.
Beanstack
Our school-wide reading program will kick off in October! This year, we will be using the digital platform, Beanstack, to log reading minutes and participate in reading challenges. Our ultimate goal is to build a strong culture of reading at Woodward Mill. For many students, Beanstack is a familiar program, as it has been used for several years by the Gwinnett County Public Library to log summer reading minutes.
October will be a training month in the program, and we will focus on learning how to login and how to log reading minutes. We are excited about using Beanstack to support our community of readers. More information to come!
