Cougar Connect

Week of November 11, 2019

No School Reminder

There is no school tomorrow, Monday, November 11, due to Veteran’s Day.

New Cafeteria Window Opening

Last year students shared a lot of feedback with me about the cafeteria food, so I reached out to our District nutrition leads and they listened. As a result, a group of Kennedy students got to share student feedback, take pictures of food, etc. The results were shared through a presentation that students helped to create. It was shared in one of the Cougar Connect newsletters.

Now as a result, some changes will be happening. Starting this week, a second cafeteria window will open. It will have some grab and go items like pizza and chicken sandwiches that anyone can get (including those with free or reduced lunch). It will also have additional add on items like bottled water, Izzie sparkling drinks, etc. Students must have cash in their accounts to buy these items. These were some of the things students requested last year. See the fliers attached below for more details. More a la carte items will be added throughout the year. We will be collecting more student feedback to help determine some of these additional items. Great job Kennedy students for speaking up!

Astronomy Night

The Science Department is hosting our second annual Astronomy Night. Join us this Tuesday, November 12, at 6 pm at the picnic tables in front of the 500 wing by the field. We will have pizza and other treats. Then we will have telescopes out to look at the full moon. Feel free to bring your own telescope as well. If you are planning to attend, please use the link below to RSVP so we know how much food to get.

Vaping Education

Please join us this Thursday night for the free vaping education night at Kennedy in the gym at 7 pm. We would really like every Kennedy student to attend if they didn’t come to this presentation last year. This is a growing epidemic nationwide and students need to understand the dangers. This will be a chance for families to see what the devices look like, learn more about vaping, and ask questions. Please RSVP ahead of time if possible so we know the quantity of snacks needed. This presentation is open to others in the community, so spread the word as well. As a bonus for attending, Kennedy students will receive extra credit points for their PE class.

Dress Code Reminders

Please be sure that your student is dressed appropriately for school and following school dress code rules. When students aren’t dressed appropriately it can be a distraction for other students. Some of the main things we are seeing are: jeans with excessively big holes/rips, students wearing red shirts and trying to hide them under sweatshirts, midriffs showing, and pajama bottoms. Your student will be asked to change and/or families will be called to bring a change of clothes.

Construction Update

The new admin building is coming along nicely. It is now projected to be done right around the start of winter break. Below are some pictures. Sorry, the ones of the inside are not the best. They were working inside the building everywhere when I got to tour the other day, so there were only certain angles I could take pictures from.

The end of the first trimester is this Wednesday. Teachers then have until Monday, November 18, to update grades. Please be aware that the gpa in PowerSchool does not update automatically. As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we ran a report to see how students were doing. Apparently that is why a gpa suddenly showed up in PowerSchool. However, it won’t update again until we lock in the grades on Monday, November 18.

There is no school on Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26. Instead families can attend conferences to meet with teachers. Students are welcome to come along. Because we have so many students, conferences are on a drop in basis from 8 am to 3 pm. Staff will take a lunch break from 12-1 pm. Please note that the Friday before, November 22, is a minimum day per RCSD, so students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm. We will be on an alternative schedule that day.

Zero Period

We do have some spots available in all zero period classes (Art, Robotics/Project Lead the Way, and Choir) . Please email me if your child is interested in attending a zero period.

Graduation Committee

The first meeting for the 8th grade graduation committee will be on Tuesday, November 19, from 6-7 pm in the gym right before the PTO meeting.

Shadowing at Kennedy

Help us spread the word! Incoming Kennedy 6th graders can setup a day to shadow at Kennedy and see what it is like. If they want to shadow they can contact the Kennedy Office or email me, We will be sending out flyers this week to the feeder schools about shadowing and touring.

After School Reminder

This is a reminder again that students need to leave within 10 minutes after school is over unless they are part of a school sponsored activity or program. Kennedy Middle School administration and staff are not responsible for student supervision after that point. We have students hanging out on campus until 5 or 6 pm, which is a problem. If your child cannot be picked up, the Kennedy Family Center and administrators would like to work with you to get your student into some type of supervised, structured after school program. Please reach out to us.

ELD Potluck

Join us on Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 6-7 pm in the library if you have an ELD student at Kennedy. This is a chance to meet other families, learn how to help your student with reading, and prepare for upcoming conferences with teachers. See the flier below.

Elective & Club Showcase Night

Our second annual Elective & Club Showcase Night is Thursday, November 21, from 7-8:30 pm. Come and learn about many of our electives and clubs. Bring the whole family! There will be performances, projects to participate in, and games to play. Please help us get the word out to our feeder schools as well. This is a great opportunity to start getting to know Kennedy.
