Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we need a new middle school?
Built-in 1968, as the original Jr. Sr. High School, TMS has also served as an elementary school (1992) and now as the Tyngsborough Middle School (2002). Despite renovations and extensive maintenance efforts, over time, the building has reached the end of its useful life. Due to space limitations, and antiquated systems and equipment, the facility can no longer support today’s instructional models and programmatic expectations for middle school students.
Why new construction vs renovation?
Throughout 2021, the School Building Committee performed an extensive, in-depth feasibility study in conjunction with the MSBA; the study concluded that the most cost-effective, educationally beneficial, and sustainable long-term solution is to build a new school. This study included the development and review of multiple construction solutions with evaluation criteria and probable cost associations such as a code-only upgrade, a renovation/addition, new construction options, and an option to construct a new school at the elementary school site.
What is the current Tyngsborough Middle School enrollment and future enrollment?
The current Tyngsborough Middle School enrollment is 392 students. Working in conjunction with the MSBA, the District and the MSBA have agreed to a design enrollment of 480 students.
Who is the MSBA?
The MSBA is a state government authority that partners with local communities to create cost-effective, sustainable, educationally appropriate public schools across Massachusetts. Created in 2004, the MSBA provides reimbursements to communities based on a pre-determined percentage of eligible school construction costs.
How much will the project cost the Town?
The New Middle School Project, if passed, will be funded in part by a grant from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The anticipated project cost is $82.5 million. The anticipated MSBA grant is $28.3 million, resulting in an anticipated District Share of $54.2 million. A subsequent mailer will follow with updated MSBA grant reimbursement and anticipated tax impact data.
What will it take to pass this project?
To be successful, the community will need a 2/3 majority vote at the annual town meeting on May 3, 2022, and a majority vote on a ballot question on May 17, 2022.
Annual Town Meeting 5/3
The annual town meeting will be hosted on 5/3. In order to be successful there needs to be a 2/3 majority vote and the meeting. Then on 5/17 during the ballot vote there needs to be majority in order for the TMS Building Project to pass.
