Check Out Guidelines
When can students come to the library and how many books can they check out at a time?
Students can come to the library in the mornings during arrival time, any time their teacher allows them to visit during the day, and during their regular specials visit. Kindergarten students start with 1 book and work towards 2 by the end of the year. 1st and 2nd grade students can check out 2 books. 3rd-5th graders can check out 4 books at a time.
How long can I keep them?
Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time. Even though they will not have library as a special each week, students are encouraged to visit the library once a week to get a new book. If they only check out books when they come for their special, their books will always be overdue! :(
What kinds of books?
K students start with Everybody books and then learn about nonfiction when we increase to 2 books. 1st and 2nd graders will be encouraged to check out one fiction and one nonfiction book. 3rd-5th graders are encouraged to check out a mix of genres, including Everybody books, that are Just Right Books.
We need your help in the media center!
We have a large number of students and an even larger number of books! We are always in need of volunteers to shelve books or help us out with other jobs in the library. We can use your help any day, any time, every week! This is a great volunteer opportunity if you arrive early for carpool and want to come inside to pass the time! Don't forget to complete the WCPSS volunteer application in the library anytime in August and September. Email Ms. Headley or Ms. Ray about coming in to volunteer!
Athens Drive Public Library
Do you know about our local public library? Athens Drive High School's library serves as both a school and public library. You can find information about hours and programs by visiting the site here. Of course, if you do not live in our direct area, you can find out which public library serves your neighborhood by visiting Wake County Public Library's website.

Fall Author Visits
Cassie Beasley Visit--September 9
We welcomed first-time author of Circus Mirandus, Cassie Beasley, to Combs the second week of school. She was a pleasure to listen to as she read from her book and talked about growing up to become a writer. Visit her website at http://cassiebeasley.com/ .
Quail Ridge Books
We are fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with Quail Ridge Books, a locally owned bookstore in Raleigh. It is because of them that we are able to bring these authors to our school! Please support QRB by shopping local!
Chris Grabenstein is coming on October 10
We are excited to welcome Chris Grabenstein to Combs in October! He has collaborated with James Patterson to write the I Funny series and is also the author of Mr. Lemoncello's Library books, among others. He has a new book, Wonderland, coming out and will be speaking with our 3rd-5th graders. All students will be able to purchase books.

Library Assistant applications will be available for pick up in the library beginning the first day of school.
