  • Finished out Kennedy's term
  • Ran in the next election against Barry Goldwater

The Great Society

  • Domestic programs
  • Two main goals
  • First social reforms eliminating poverty
  • Eliminating racial injustice
  • New spending for education, medical, urban problems, transportation
  • Anti war democrats said spending for Vietnam took away from Great Society

24th Amendment

  • Right for citizens to vote in any election
  • They cannot be denied for not paying poll tax
  • Congress has the power to enforce this
  • Virginia, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi only states with poll tax

Tonkin Gulf Resolution and Vietnam War

  • It was a joint resolution= response to Gulf of Tonkin incident
  • Gave President Johnson the okay to send military without declaration of war
  • Rapid military into South Vietnam and fought with North Vietnam
  • Johnson told public on national television that we need to help South Vietnam
  • Johnson ordered Operation Rolling Thunder

Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act

  • Outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin
  • Ended unequal application of voter requirements
  • Ended racial segregation in public schools, workplace, general public facilities
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965= not discrimination in voting
  • Enforce the voting rights that 14 and 15 amendment protected
  • Established federal oversight over elections
