Message from Mr. Turnbow
Dear Parents,
Spring is definitely in the air at East Middle School, and we need to prepare for the onslaught of “Spring Fever”! What is the best treatment for this common ailment? The tried and true prescription is a consistent dose of routine, structure and patience.
The early adolescent period of life is the time for the greatest changes in the brain that are responsible for higher-level functions such as self-control, judgment, emotions, and organization. This information may help to explain certain middle school behaviors that can appear mystifying, such as poor decision-making, recklessness, and emotional outbursts. Armed with this knowledge, we can work together to help our students navigate this
exciting and challenging time with as little chaos as possible.
At school, each teacher has established practices and procedures for your child to follow each day. By this time of the year, your student should be familiar with the homework expectations and policies of his/her team. Jupiter is a valuable tool for parents and students to use to monitor class assignments and student progress. Our school counselors are available to students who need assistance in academic and/or social areas. We have many extracurricular activities from athletics to clubs for students to connect with other students and staff outside of school.
Remembering that research supports what parents and teachers have long suspected – the middle schooler’s brain is very different from the adult brain - will help support our student’s continued success.
Sincerely,
Scott Turnbow
Principal
