Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
January 17, 2020
Happy Friday!
I feel like we made huge gains this week in all areas of 3rd grade. I am pushing your children to work harder, think harder, and do better - boy are they showing me they CAN! Their willingness to buy into me pushing them is so gratifying!
One area where most students are struggling right now is the area of focus and stamina. Students struggle to sit for a 15-20 minute writing prompt. They struggle to listen to oral directions without reminders to listen, eyes on teacher, and constant verbal prompting. I see this getting worse as devices continue to invade our culture at younger and younger ages. Giving device restrictions to your children is a GREAT thing. HERE is an online article I read recently from Psychology Today that is evidence of some of the harmful effects of too much screen time for children (especially very small children where their brains are rapidly developing).
I hope you enjoy your long weekend. Stay safe out there. Sounds like we have some weather woes heading our way this evening!
That's all I have for now...

Reading:
- We started reading Because of Winn Dixie last week. This book will be used as a class read-aloud (I read a chapter and the students follow along), and they will be assigned a chapter to read for homework each night. This is a 4th grade level book. If your child struggles to read it independently, feel free to help him/her by reading a page or two. I want the book to be enjoyable, yet this is a great book to really strengthen reading skills.
- We are learning about character traits and using author clues (inference) to help us understand them and their relationships with other characters.
Math: Unit 5 -Fractions and Multiplication Strategies
Writing: Persuasive - Opinion
We are plugging away learning about effective persuasive writing. The final project will consist of a typed 5 paragraph essay.
We are also learning about PROMPT WRITING and how to effectively respond to a prompt.
Word Study - Grammar
- Continuing what we started last week - Spelling words with ou-ow
- Nouns: common/proper, singular/plural, possessive
Science: Scientific Method (We are a little behind in Science)
Students will learn the steps to The Scientific Method. We will also begin some fun experiments that will apply the steps of The Scientific Method. Don't be surprised if your child comes home from school wanting to perform science experiments once we begin!
Our first experiment - The Froot Loop Experiment!
