PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bidwell Families,
Welcome back to school for a great 2020! Your Bidwell Team is ready to finish the second half of this school year on a strong note. I’d like to thank the many of you who took the time to share your feedback on the mid-year parent survey as well as to those of you who have talked with me directly. One concern that several of you shared was related to Chromebook filters/access. We have been working with our IT Department to improve student security in this area. Please see the message for IT below.
As always, please reach out to us if you feel like your student isn’t feeling physically and/or emotionally safe at school: that is our first priority.
Respectfully,
David McKay
Principal

Sent on behalf of the CUSD IT Department …
In a continued effort to improve student technology, the IT Department has implemented a few changes to help foster learning while maintaining student safety. Below is a quick summary of modifications being made to our Chromebooks and PCs.
CHROMEBOOK FEATURE ENHANCEMENTS:
· Student Chromebook webcams are an important collaboration tool and can continue to be utilized, but students will no longer have the ability to live stream video publicly.
· In the past, when a Chromebook’s lid was closed, the person using it would remain logged into their Chromebook. From now on, all students and staff will be logged off upon closing the screen. Quick Tip: you can quickly lock Chromebooks during lectures with GoGuardian. Not sure how? Contact your Computer Tech, and let us show you.
· Did you know students can use Windows on their Chromebooks? Yes, they can! But there are a couple of changes coming that will make it safer for them to use.
o We’re changing how they access Windows. To use a ‘virtual’ Windows computer while on a Chromebook, your students should now go to https://view.chicousd.org. We’ll add it as a bookmark on their Chromebooks.
o Those ‘virtual’ Windows machines will be secured so students can no longer run unapproved software. This will help them stay on task and will significantly minimize the chances of a virus infecting our network.
PCs FEATURE ENHANCEMENT:
· In Windows, students will now be required to login to the Chrome browser with their CUSD account in order to access the Internet. Students logging in with their CUSD accounts is the first step towards allowing you to use GoGuardian to manage Windows machines, just like you do with Chromebooks.
FUTURE SECURITY CHANGES FOR CHROMEBOOKS and PCs:
· Most educational based websites are safe for students to access. However, just as with apps, any website that accesses student data must be vetted to ensure they comply with student privacy laws. A district-wide review of all websites with access to student data will be conducted over the summer. Changes will NOT affect any current websites for the remainder of the 19/20 school year.
CHARACTER STRONG
Write a note and secretly leave it for someone in your life who, behind the scenes, helps you to be the best version of yourself. Think about the people in your life who work so hard to help you to be successful. Who is it that scarifies for you with their time and energy? Go out of your way to say thanks!
HISTORY GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT
Ms. Hopper's history classes were hard at work baking and creating over break. Students had to either build or bake an item representing medieval times. There were catapults and castles aplenty, along with dragons, shields, swords, and more. At the end of each class, students got to sample their classmates' creations!
