Artwork of the European Renaissance
Presented by the Arts Center Of Saint Peter
What is there to see?
This exhibit will display some of the most well know pieces of art from the European Renaissance. One of these are the Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. It is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, but da Vinci may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It is thought to be a portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, Lisa Gherardini. Today it is in Paris at the Louvre museum.
Statue of David
Michelangelo finished this piece in 1504. The statue represents David, a biblical hero. Because of this, it came to symbolize the defense of civil liberty in Florence. David's eyes were turned towards Rome with a warning glare. The original statue has since been moved to a gallery in Florence and a replica was placed at the original site.
Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is part of the Apostolic Palace- the residence of the Pope in Vatican City. Today it is the location at which the process of picking a new Pope takes place. From 1508 to 1512, Michelangelo painted the entire ceiling with beautiful murals. He returned in 1535 to paint The Last Judgement for Pope Alexander III.
The Last Supper
Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper in the late 15th century. It was part of a set of renovations done to the Santa Maria delle Grazie, or "Holy Mary of Grace," church in Milan. The painting depicts the last supper of Jesus and his 12 disciples, showing the worry among them as Jesus announces that one of them will betray him.
