Are we collegial or congenial?
At last week's staff development, we focused our attention on being better coaches because everyone, no matter the job or the amount of experience, can benefit from being coached. I touched briefly on how coaching goes beyond just the formal coaching cycle. Many things we naturally do with one another--calibrate grading, discuss lesson design, study books and articles together, to name a few--are important parts of coaching one another to be more effective in the classroom and to have a greater impact on student learning.
As we work to become better instructional coaches, we must remember the important difference between congenial conversation (friendly but surface-level) and collegial conversation (rich, meaningful dialogue focused on our craft). Our goal, of course, is to be collegial during the coaching process. This article on the subject was shared with me by Mr. Quick, and the author points out, "What schools have instead of collegiality is congeniality. Congeniality is about getting along well, being friendly, warm, and supportive." Our friendly, open atmosphere is, of course, very important. We have powerful connections in our departments and with other teachers throughout our campus. However, only being congenial can be limiting: "Congeniality provides an essential foundation for a faculty’s sense of community and its work with students. What it doesn’t provide is any meaningful attention to that work. By itself, it fosters a culture of niceness and privacy, not a culture of growth." The coaching initiative is meant to draw meaningful attention and reflection regarding our curriculum and pedagogy because we must continue to grow and learn ourselves in order to better prepare our students for life after high school.
Have a fabulous week!
