IMPORTANT INFORMATION
CMMS Students and Families,
Students did a great job this week of persevering and showing what they know, and still need to learn on the SBA/WCAS state assessments this past week, we are super proud of our Cougars! Make up tests will be completed over the next few weeks for any absent students or those that have not yet finished. This week we have normal schedules Monday-Wednesday. On Thursday we have an early dismissal for grade prep, and on Friday there is no school as it is a professional development day for staff. We look forward to getting all of our families signed up for student-led conferences as this is such an important time for us to connect and partner with you on your student's success here at Cougar Mountain. As always please read through all the important information included in this newsletter, and have a great week!
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE SIGN-UPS:
Our fall Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) are coming up on October 27-29th. You will have the opportunity to meet with your student and their advisory teacher to hear about their goals, their progress so far this year, and provide some of your own support for a successful year. If you have not received an invitation from your child's advisory teacher, please email them right away. We look forward to seeing you here at CMMS or on Zoom if you prefer at the end of the month!
HELP FOR THE HOLIDAYS:

LIBRARY AFTER LUNCH:
The library is now open for all three lunches every Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Scan the QR code on the stage after eating your lunch and enjoy the rest of your break in the library. Read, charge your iPad, or engage in some fun socially distanced activities.
EXPECTATIONS:
Please remind your students, students remind yourselves, of our building-wide expectations. We need students to remain safe in the hallways, be sure go straight to class and be there on-time. We cannot meander in the hallways, be sure to walk and not run, keep one ear bud in at a time, follow the correct traffic pattern, wear your mask properly and be sure to sanitize before entering your classes. Keep your hands to yourself and follow all COVID protocols so we can all stay in school full time and stay safe in all ways!

Winter I Athletics Updates
The season begins for Girls Basketball and Wrestling on November 1st. Girls Basketball will have tryouts, and teams will be announced by mid of the week. Wrestling is a non-cut sport, meaning all students who wish to participate will be able to. Students who wish to participate must have an ASB card and must also have current physical on file (physicals are valid for 13 months from their original date). Students will be unable to practice on the first day without these steps completed.
Please visit ParentVue to sign students up for athletics (School Links -->Athletic Registration Forms). You will upload your physical here as well. Families must have an active ParentVue account before attempting registration. Pay to Participate (PTP) and ASB card purchases are available on the CMMS website (Payments & Purchases).
Please see the flyer below regarding any questions around registration for sports!

COVID UPDATES
The impact of COVID on our students, staff and communities is significant! As of 10/15/21 we will have 32 students that are out of the building due to one or more of the following: having symptoms and awaiting test results, exposed and are not vaccinated, or have tested positive. We have had 20 positive student cases, but we have NOT had any transmission at school thus far. Thank you for your support of students wearing their masks and wearing them properly as this has prevented the spread at school! Please see the images below for the most up-to-date decision trees provided by TPCHD.
It's important to know the following:
- If your student tests positive or is showing symptoms, please contact our office at 253-800-8093, this will then initiate our contact tracing protocols.
- If your student has been exposed at school you will either be contacted directly by office staff, or you will receive an automated call. Automated calls are only used when there are multiple students affected, this is simply due to time and staff constraints. Please answer the calls and check your emails, also please make sure your contact information is up to date in ParentVUE!
- Office staff will give you next step guidance in terms of testing options and potential quarantine requirements.
- If your student must be out of school for an extended period of time you should expect that the student will access their learning materials in CANVAS. All courses will have a module in CANVAS that is specifically for this. Considering the amount of students out at any given time, we cannot sustainably expect students and families to receive individual communication from teachers. That is why we set up the system so that all students start their learning in CANVAS and can follow their teacher's guidance from there.
- If your student has to be out and has not completed their STAR testing in math or reading they may do so at home. If they have to be out during SBA/WCAS testing, they may not test at home. We will test them at school when they return.
- If your student is vaccinated, it would be very helpful for you to email a picture of their vaccination card to our health clerk at ngoldsberr@bethelsd.org so if your child is exposed at school we can very quickly see that information and get them back to class.
From Your Secretary Ms. Gates
If you need to change your transportation arrangements for your student during the school day, we will accept changes until 1:00 pm. This gives us plenty of time to get any messages to your student regarding their revised pick up plan.
As always we are happy to deliver any item that you may need to drop off to your student through the front office entry, and if you ever need anything, just call or pop by and we will be happy to help.
STAFF, STUDENTS & COMMUNITY KUDOS COUGARS
We LOVE when students and families want to celebrate our students, staff and community members! Please complete the simple google form below if you want to give a shout out to a student, staff member, or community member that is doing something you feel they should be commended for! It could be something school-related, or it could be anything outside of school too. We want to CELEBRATE and RECOGNIZE as much as we can!!! We will use this for social media shout outs, morning announcements, newsletters and reader-board messages. Very exciting!

BSD Stories of the Week
JBHS Mascot Survey
The Bethel High School 2021 Mascot Review Committee wants to hear from you! House Bill 1356 took effect this year and states that, “public schools may not use Native American names, symbols, or images as school mascots, logos, or team names.” This includes the name “Braves.” To bring BHS into compliance with the new law, a committee made up of students, staff and community members is reviewing mascots and logos and determining what will embody the next chapter in BHS history. Please share you thoughts by clicking here: https://forms.gle/TgUU7cpRmCS4TdJu6
Bethel facilities available for limited use
Effective immediately, community use of Bethel School District facilities, as outlined in school board policy, is reinstated in a limited capacity. Facilities will be available on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Approval for use will be subject to the availability of space and necessary district personnel. The group using the facility will be responsible for following State and Pierce County COVID-19 requirements. Masks and social distancing are required. https://bethelsd.schoolspace.us/home
HIV/AIDS Curriculum
It's time for the annual parent preview of the HIV/AIDS Prevention curriculum. On October 13, 14 and 19 we will hold virtual previews that will last about 20 minutes. You only need to attend if you would like to view the curriculum for yourself or if you are interested in opting your student(s) out of the curriculum. You can learn more and register for one of the sessions by clicking here: https://www.bethelsd.org/cms/lib/WA01918819/Centricity/Domain/338/Flyer%20for%20HIV_AIDS%20Presentation%202021.pdf
