For Heaven's Sake
January 2017
From the Principal's Desk
This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. It is a time to recognize the important role Catholic education plays in the life of our Faith. The theme of Catholic Schools Week is Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. These attributes help our students prepare for their life as faith-filled individuals and understand their role in the world around them. As a Catholic school, we believe it is important to teach students to go beyond the classroom, to serve and use their God-given talents to contribute to the church, our community and our nation. We are proud to be a part of the many Catholic schools that excel and frequently outperform public schools as well as other private schools in national test scores and high school and college graduation rates. We believe in each of our students and we are blessed to be a part of their academic and faith journey. Thank you for choosing a Catholic education and thank you for choosing OLQHS.

The Art World
First we must congratulate all the Artsonia Hall of Famers. In Kindergarten we have Meredith McCall and Amelia Broussard. The First Graders who entered the Hall of Fame are Adrien Allen and Grace Smith. Second Graders included are Dayne Matt and Greyson Snow. Our only Third Grader is Alayna Lefort. Fourth Graders Gray Allen and Jack Ortego are our new Hall of Famers. Our Eighth Grade student achieving the Hall of Fame is Win Goodwin. Congratulations to everyone!
- Kindergarten has made wonderful Rainbow Angel Fish which are on display in the Fine Arts Building and we will begin working on their Mardi Gras pictures. Many Kindergarten parents HAVE NOT signed up for Artsonia. Please do so. It is quite simple and takes very little time. No one, including you and your family, can see their artwork on line until you do.
- First Grade has been working on wonderful pictures that show perspective and our combined hopes for "snow". It is "The Snowman in the Yard" with craypas on black construction paper. They are looking great.
- Second Graders winter pictures are also with craypas, showing an Emperor Penguin floating on an ice floe. They are looking fabulous. Second Grader will also make their own wearable Mardi Gras Masks for the Kindergarten Parade.
- Third Graders are working on their Gourd Bugs. They are very cute and colorful--unlike most "real" bugs. Fourth Graders are also working on a wearable Mask for the Kindergarten Parade--just imagine the glitter and feathers.
- Seventh Graders are working on their Abstracts in the style of Mr. Jay Bowdon, a local artist. He came in and taught them how to do it and will return to critique their work in the comment section on Artsonia. Thank you, Mr. Bowdon.
NEWS FLASH!!!!!: ARTSONIA T-SHIRT DAY IS THURSDAY, MARCH 2ND
On Artsonia T-Shirt Day the student can wear any of their artwork on an Artsonia T-Shirt with jeans. It is a great opportunity for the students to show off their beautiful artwork and a wonderful opportunity for the Art Department to earn money--we get 20% of each sale. It is the only Art Fund Raiser during the year.
Thanks for all you do in supporting the art program and all the programs at Our Lady Queen of Heaven. Remember we are being creative, making messes, and having fun.

Finally, if you receive a letter back from your shoebox child, would you mind if we have a copy of it? We keep these copies in our OCC binder for future reference.

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
