This Is How We Lakeview
September 2022 Edition: Volume 5
Welcome October!
One of our goals this year is to work as a team with our families to make Lakeview the best it can be for all of our students. This is where you come in. We need your feedback! We know that students are at their best when families and schools work together, and we would like you to take a few minutes to complete this anonymous survey to let us know what we’re doing well and where we can improve. At the end of the anonymous survey, you will have an opportunity to click a link to go to a separate form to enter your contact information into a drawing for a $50 Kroger gift card as a “thank you.” This survey is also linked towards the end of the newsletter.
We have several days in October that the students are not in school. Here are the dates and the expectations for those days:
Wednesday, Oct 5th - Virtual Learning Day (students will have assignments, please have them check their Google Classrooms and school email)
Monday, Oct 10th - Parent Teacher Conferences (no work assigned on this day)
Monday, Oct 24th - Professional Development Day (no work assigned on this day)
Tuesday, Oct 25th - Virtual Learning Day (students will have assignments, please have them check their Google Classrooms and school email)
Other noteworthy items:
1. Our Fall Spirit Wear Fundraiser is coming soon! More information will be in next week's newsletter.
2. iReady/ALEKS expectations - now that the diagnostics have been completed, students have their own personal pathway to follow in iReady or ALEKS (Algebra and Geometry students). The students have been having data chats with their teachers to see how passing their recommended number iReady lessons and ALEKS topics directly relates to their performance on the Ohio State Tests (OSTs) in the Spring. Students should be working in study hall or at home to complete at least 2 iReady lessons in Reading and 2 in Math each week. Students who have ALEKS need to be completing 10 topics a week. For more information on iReady and how you can support your student please visit the iReady Family Center.
3. I do not have a date for the next round of school pictures, but I have been in contact with Jostens about scheduling one ASAP.
4. The PTO is looking for a few volunteers to monitor open gyms on October 14th or 22nd from 5:30-7:30 pm. if you would like to volunteer, please send an email with your name and the date you are available to lakeviewpickpto@gmail.com

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SEPTEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!
Each month at Lakeview, teachers nominate the students who are going above and beyond what is expected of them. These students show respect for themselves, others, and learning through Building Positive Relationships, Personal Discipline, and Being Better Today Than Yesterday! Congratulations to our September nominees: Amy Lee, Gloria Adeoye, Mya Foster, Rico J. Lambert, Melat Solomon, Elvin Cedeno Olazagasti, Kendall Hamilton, Sofie-Blu Willis
Lakeview student section in Panther Stadium
We are excited to announce that Lakeview students now have their own bleacher section in Panther stadium! The junior high student section can be found on the far end of the home bleachers, next to the high school student section. This way our students can watch the game, hang out with friends, learn the student section cheers, and free up the area near the concession stand. If your student is attending the football game tomorrow, the expectation is that they are in the JH student section or with parents in the stands.
Lost and Found is getting full
Our lost and found is located in the hallway on the way to the cafeteria. If you recognize any items in the picture, please have your student stop by and pick it up.
True Goals - Partnership with OSU
We are pleased to announce that, starting in the second quarter, we have expanded our current True Goals goal setting program so that all PLSD junior high students will be participating in it to set their own goals, track their progress towards their goals, and celebrate their success. The True Goals lessons themselves are short, taking 20 minutes of PAW time, and the students will participate in the program one day a week for seven weeks in either the second or third quarter.
This is a research-based program that has been shown to positively impact students’ motivation, self-knowledge, self-direction, and positive relationships with other students and teachers. The lessons cover 10 principles of goal setting, encouraging students to set and attain their own academic, social, and personal goals. We all have things that we want to work on, and this program equips students to navigate the goal setting process so that they succeed and build on this success with future goals.
We are excited to partner with a team from Ohio State, who has supported us as we train our staff in this program. They will also support us as we evaluate the positive impact of this program. Specifically, we are interested to see how True Goals impacts two factors that are important to student success: sense of school belonging and hope. These are two powerful supporters of success for our students. We know that hope is a better predictor of post-secondary success than GPA, ACT or SAT scores. We know that if students have high levels of school belonging that they succeed in school. So, we are focused on improving all our students’ feelings of hope and school belonging. To better evaluate the program, the team from Ohio State is conducting a research study that involves four brief surveys that students will take over the course of the program to see how students grow. More information on the study is provided below. If you have any questions about the program or if you would like to see the questions from the surveys, here is a link to the Hope Scale, and here is a link to the School Belonging Scale.
Follow up to Interim Grades
Last week, you should have received an interim grade report for your student in your email. Just a reminder that this is a snapshot of how your student is doing at that point in time. The end of 1st quarter is October 14th. Continue to check your student's progress in Infinite Campus. If you are looking for some tips and ways to help your student be more successful, I have attached an article with some executive functioning activities.
If passed, what will the Nov. 8 bond issue cost residents?
Pickerington Schools estimates that passage of the Nov. 8 levy will not increase tax rates (measured in mills) for our residents. The county auditor has estimated that the $89.930 million bond issue will require 2.80 mills for debt payments. But, because property valuations are forecasted to increase by an average of 24% for 2022, and due to the structure of the proposed new debt, district leaders forecast that the county auditor will actually be able to decrease the total tax rate needed to pay district debt service by ½ of a mill.
The tax rate collected by the district to pay debt payments has decreased as outstanding debt has been retired, refunded for better interest rates, and as district valuation has increased. Visit https://www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/bond-issue-info/ under the “What Will It Cost?” section to read more on how the tax rate has changed since 2015, and the forecasted tax rate for the 2022 tax year (which will first be paid in 2023).

As part of this event there is a silent auction which includes upscale baskets and themed, decorated trees. Each school's PTO is responsible for providing a themed tree. This year Lakeview's theme is OSU. The PTO is asking for donations to make our tree the best one there! I have attached the link below.
