Help Your Child Succeed in School With Good Attendance
Build a habit of good attendance early
What you can do.
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
- Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Try to schedule non-Covid-19 related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- If you are concerned that your child may have Covid-19, call your school for advice.
- If your child must stay home due to illness or quarantine, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.
Hand Foot and Mouth Disease
One of the common childhood illnesses we’re seeing occasionally in our schools is also showing up in adults as well - hand, foot and mouth disease. This is an illness caused by a virus, and is very contagious. It commonly shows up as a rash, made up of small reddish bumps or blisters.
Warning About "Swatting"
Swatting:“Swatting” is an unfortunate trend happening across our country where a caller contacts police and claims to be in a building where there is an active threat which results in immediate rapid response by law enforcement. This often leaves little time for police to verify the caller’s claims.
These calls are difficult to trace as most use encrypted internet signals.
Unfortunately, these “swatting” incidents have recently impacted some of our neighboring school districts including Beaverton, Hillsboro, North Clackamas, and Portland Public. While we certainly hope none of our schools fall victim to a “swatting” scam, the potential is there and we are working with our staff and students to prepare and be ready when they happen.
Please talk with your students about how serious false threats are and the importance of responsibly reporting serious information. The forwarding of unconfirmed information through sharing with friends or on social media can cause significant fear and disruption.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us to keep our schools safe and secure for our students, staff, and community.

Art Literacy Programs Are Off to a Good Start
Have you seen all of the beautiful artwork in hallways and classrooms throughout TTSD Elementary Schools? Elementary School Art Literacy Coordinators and teachers volunteer their time to learn to teach and experience making art with classes throughout the year. Coordinators participated in two Art Lit Workshops, New Presenter Training and Printmaking Techniques led by local artist Amy Stoner, and experienced a hands-on project also creating Georgia O'Keeffe-inspired flower watercolor paintings.
These workshops teach the coordinators and their volunteers how to adapt projects to meet the skills and needs of students across the grade levels. They have an opportunity to learn about art mediums they may not have experienced, a variety of materials to achieve similar outcomes (ink vs paint, different qualities of paper, etc.), and specific techniques in that medium.
We appreciate all of the parent volunteers helping students experience a diverse mix of artists and their work.
