What's Happening in December?
Hello La Ballona Families,
I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving Break, filled with relaxation and family time. Because the month of December will fly by, here are the most important things happening at La Ballona in December.
December's Theme
Each month, our elementary schools establish a theme that we embed in our instruction. December's theme is the Spirit of Giving Back. We'll focus on this theme, while also highlighting actions we can take to fight injustices around the world and in our community.
American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge Kickoff, December 2
On December 2 at 9:10, we will have our first school-wide daytime assembly. More information is below. Then, on December 16, we will have our second school-wide daytime assembly at 9:10. This is a great way for children to give themselves a healthy heart, and to possibly raise funds for the AHA.
Report Card Time
While we've relaxed in the beautiful SoCal weather, our teachers probably spent some of their vacation time diligently working on Report Cards. Trimester 1 Report Cards will be given to you during your Parent Conference.
Parent Conference Time
Each year, our academic calendar embeds time for teachers to meet with each family regarding student progress. If you haven't received a scheduled time by the end of this week, please email your child's teacher or call the school office. Teachers will be holding conferences on: December 7, 8, 10, 11, 14 and 15. On each of these days, all students will be dismissed from school at 11:45. Next week I will share suggestions in the Weekly Roar on how to have a successful parent-teacher conference.

Dear Parents,
I am thrilled to share that we have an upcoming Kids Heart Challenge assembly on December 2nd! This interactive assembly will launch a two-week program that bring our school community together in a fun way, to rally around physical and mental wellness. Students will learn how they can have happy and healthy hearts, families will be challenged to get active, and we’ll all learn how we can help others with special hearts and help provide healthy food access to families in need.
Livestream Assembly on Wednesday, December 2nd at 9:10am-9:30am via Zoom

A Message from Ms. Jerome, School Counselor
As the holidays are upon us, so is Trimester 2! In fact, it begins right after we return from the Thanksgiving Break. Most of your students will be participating in their last school counseling session for Trimester 1 next week, and I wanted to make sure you have everything ready to continue with school counseling if that's in your plans.

STEM Without Boundaries
The STEM Without Boundaries LA County STEM Night is going virtual this year. This event has numerous STEM organizations attending including Caltech CTLO, UCSD Science Initiative, and others. A STEM Night-- similar to an open house-- is an event where students can come and learn all about different STEM fields and careers, participate in interactive activities/experiments, and watch live demos.
The event will be hosted on December 2nd from 5-7PM PST through Zoom, and will be extremely beneficial for those who attend.
There are no costs for attending the event, and all students from K-6th grade are welcome! Below is the flyer and sign up form.
There will be a maximum number of participants, so if you are interested in taking part in this exciting and engaging virtual STEM Night, please sign up as soon as possible using this form.
Please direct any questions to swblaregion@gmail.com.
Attention 5th Grade Parents
Each school year, we ask our fifth graders to complete the California Healthy Kids Survey during class time. The information we receive helps us make smart decisions about how La Ballona promotes better health and well-being for our students. All 5th grade families need to click here to tell us if we may or may not give this electronic survey to your child.
Walk Across America Challenge
Don't forget to sign up and record your steps using the pedometers we gave you. Sign up today on the Culver City Walk & Rollers website and let’s get walking and rolling together!

Everyone Belongs in our PTA!
We want all families to know that they are welcome to attend our PTA meetings and events! You do not have to be a member. The PTA is vital to our school. We provide field trips, school supplies, teacher grants, volunteer support, the garden, assemblies, family nights, and much much more. We appreciate everything our parents to to help La Ballona.
