Kindergarten News ACES
Week Of December 11th
Highlights from last week....
The majority of our friends know their letters, so we no longer will be focusing on one specific letter for the week. There are still some children that are still struggling with their letters and these friends will be working with us and other teachers during small group time to master their letters. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words. We are so proud of how far our friends have come since September!
In Math, we continue our unit on measurement. We compared length and height this week.
In Science, we continued with pushing and pulling.
We read several winter stories. During these read alouds we focused on the key ideas. We answered questions regarding the characters, problem and solution. They are getting really great at understanding the stories that are being read to them.
A peek at our learning this week....
In Phonics, we will learn the sight words "little" and "at", please practice these words at home. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words.
In Reader's Workshop, we will learn a strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?"
In Math, we will continue our unit on measurement. Our focus this week will be on weight. We will use our balance scales and compare weight by using the words "heavier" and "lighter".
In Science, we will start our unit on matter.
We will read several fun books about the Gingerbread Man. During these read alouds we will be practicing some of our strategies that we are learning in our retelling unit.

Please make sure to label winter gear if possible!!
We have a special visitor in our class! He is a magical snowman that keeps moving around our room watching us work! The class voted and named him Winter!
The book orders have been placed and should be soon!! These books will be arriving in time for our book exchange! Please send in your book for the exchange once it is wrapped! If purchasing a book is a hardship, please let me know!

Moosie the moose is still in our room. He is a magical moose that goes and speaks to the big guy( Santa). We have filled out naughty and nice slips that Morris brings to him each night. The slips come back with a message on them. Moosie is never in the same place. He moves so he can see everyone in the class.
Please label all clothing and boots. Many of the students wear same size and have the same kind of boots. If you need another warm coat please let me know we have plenty of all sizes.
This Friday December 15th is PTO's Make and Take.
December 18th is our Holiday concert in the morning. The students are practicing very hard. They alway do a great job. It would be nice if they dress up for that day.
Thank you for those who have brought in books for our book exchange and the extra ones. When you have them wrapped you can send them in. Book orders will be in this week. We will get them in time for our holiday party.
We could use more Clorox wipes and ziplock bags (Quart size).
Just a reminder that snacks should be provided from home.
Thank you for the continued support.
Notes from Mrs. Marcoux
Jingle the reindeer has joined our class and is watching us as we work and play. I think Santa will get a great report from him.

Our parent/teacher conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Please contact me at lmarcoux@arrsd.org if you would like to schedule a meeting. If it difficult for you to come in but you'd still like to speak with me, I would be happy to make an appointment to speak with you via phone. Just let me know what works best for you. If you cannot make the conference, your child's report card will be sent home on Wednesday, December 13th.
You can send in the books for the book swap at any time, I can put them away until the party date. Please contact me if you cannot send in a book so that we can have one ready for your child to participate.
