Kindergarten News ACES

Week Of December 11th

Highlights from last week....

We have been assessing our friends and they are really moving along in all academic areas. Thank you for your continuous support at home, we could not be successful without you!

The majority of our friends know their letters, so we no longer will be focusing on one specific letter for the week. There are still some children that are still struggling with their letters and these friends will be working with us and other teachers during small group time to master their letters. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words. We are so proud of how far our friends have come since September!

In Math, we continue our unit on measurement. We compared length and height this week.

In Science, we continued with pushing and pulling.

We read several winter stories. During these read alouds we focused on the key ideas. We answered questions regarding the characters, problem and solution. They are getting really great at understanding the stories that are being read to them.

A peek at our learning this week....

We are going to be very busy learning this week.

In Phonics, we will learn the sight words "little" and "at", please practice these words at home. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words.

In Reader's Workshop, we will learn a strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?"

In Math, we will continue our unit on measurement. Our focus this week will be on weight. We will use our balance scales and compare weight by using the words "heavier" and "lighter".

In Science, we will start our unit on matter.

We will read several fun books about the Gingerbread Man. During these read alouds we will be practicing some of our strategies that we are learning in our retelling unit.

Conferences are scheduled for Monday, December 11th and Tuesday, December 12th.

Holiday Book Swap

We will be having a holiday party on December 22nd. In light of the holiday and literacy, we will be participating in a holiday book swap. Your child will pick another child's name and they will buy a book for that child. A notice will be sent out. The dollar value on the books will be between $1.00 and $5.00 (Ocean State Job Lot and Dollar Tree have a great selection for low cost). If it is a hardship and this is not feasible for you, please let us know in advance. We always have extra books that your child can choose and give to their classmate. If you would like to provide a snack, please let us know.

Holiday Concert

The Holiday concert will be held on December 18th at 9 AM at ACES for Kindergarten. Please have your child wear black and white on that day.

Looking forward to our conferences! .The students will get report cards at that time. If you do not have a conference I will send it home on Wednesday.

Moosie the moose is still in our room. He is a magical moose that goes and speaks to the big guy( Santa). We have filled out naughty and nice slips that Morris brings to him each night. The slips come back with a message on them. Moosie is never in the same place. He moves so he can see everyone in the class.

Please label all clothing and boots. Many of the students wear same size and have the same kind of boots. If you need another warm coat please let me know we have plenty of all sizes.

Your children did an amazing job this week with measuring items around the room. They are having fun with the measurement unit and are working well with their partners.

Jingle the reindeer has joined our class and is watching us as we work and play. I think Santa will get a great report from him.

I have placed the book order, it should be here sometime this week.
