December Newsletter #cmspride
From The Principal...
We remind students every day to dress appropriately regarding weather conditions. If your student has outgrown their winter coat, gloves, or hat, please let us know and we will help find something for them. We have donations from local providers and staff members so that students do not have to go without a coat during the winter months.
Another reminder is to be sure and call our office if a student will be absent or late to school. If a student has not been excused by 9 am, an automatic call will be made to the home. Students may be marked as unexcused if a note or phone call from a parent or guardian is not received by our office.

Illness at School
With cold and flu season here, this is a good time to talk with your children about good hand washing techniques, coughing into their sleeves and keeping hands away from their mouth, nose and eyes. Also, here are some general guidelines to follow to determine when a child should stay home from school.
· Temperature over 99.5
· Vomiting within the past 8 hours
· Having frequent diarrhea
· Difficulty Breathing
· Open sores that are draining
· White part of the eye is red
· Unexplained rash
· Persistent coughing
· Your child acts or looks sick
We ask that you keep your child home for 24 hours fever and symptom free, without any use of medication, before returning to school. If your child is needing antibiotics for infection prescribed by a physician, we ask for your child to be on that medication for 24 hours before returning to school with a doctor’s note.
Flu vs Cold
What is the difference between a cold and flu?
Flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. Flu can have very serious associated complications.

TUBS OF NEED
We are currently in our "Tubs of Need" Campaign which is collecting donations of coats, shoes, backpacks, school supplies, stocking hats, and winter gloves. If you have the above items that are gently used, please send them with your child. Students can give these supplies to Mr. Hutch. While most items can be gently used, we do ask that the stocking hats are new.6th GRADE LEADERSHIP GROUP
The 6th-grade leadership group is now open to students who want to sign up for the second semester. Girls meet on the first Wednesday of each month while boys meet on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings are at 7:30 AM in the library. In this group, students learn leadership skills and the importance of volunteerism. If you would like your 6th-grade child to be involved in the leadership group, email Mr. Hutch at brandt.hutchiinson@usd333.com.
Staff Member of the Month- Steven Bauer
I moved to Concordia when I was five years old and attended school here grades K-12. I then attended Cloud County Community College on a track and academic scholarship before finishing my undergrad and masters work at K State. My Mom was a daycare provider for most of my years growing up and that is where I realized I really enjoyed working with kids. I have been a teacher for 17 years and all of them have been at CMS working with both 5th and 6th grade students. During my first few years back in Concordia as a teacher I actually taught with a few of the teachers who taught me in Middle School! That took some getting used to, referring to them by their first name rather than Mr., Mrs., or Miss. I feel very lucky to work with the students I have daily and hope to continue to do so for many years to come.
In my spare time I enjoy rebuilding cars. I gravitate toward muscle cars and hot rods. The oldest car I have is a 1930 Ford street rod and the newest is my 2007 Solstice. When I rebuild a car it is usually from the frame up. I do everything from the interior and bodywork/paint to the mechanical work. When I see a beautiful car I am just as interested in what is under the hood as how it looks on the outside. I have had an interest in mechanical things, especially cars since I was three years old.
