Building Fluency

JUST WHAT IS FLUENCY?

Reading fluency is much more than just speed...

Reading fluency is reading with accuracy, automaticity & comprehension as well as using appropriate phrasing and prosody (expression/enthusiasm).

Modeling through read-alouds, is a great way to help students develop reading fluency. Below are a few more ideas you may want to try.

BUILDING FLUENCY THROUGH MUSIC

We know music is a powerful teaching tool! Not only are students getting repetition to build accuracy and automaticity, but the musical tune can help students with phrasing and prosody.

You can always find a song that relates to a topic you're studying, or find a song that has words with certain patterns related to your word work for the week.

BUILDING FLUENCY THROUGH POETRY

Much like building fluency through music, poetry has a rhythm and flow. Through repeated readings students are able to build accuracy and automaticity. Poems also lead to improved phrasing and prosody. Through CLOSE reading, students can develop comprehension with poems as well.

Again, find poems that relate to what you're studying to make them meaningful.
