Local Author Visits Kulshan

On March 19, Kulshan is hosting local author Christine Day, who wrote I Can Make This Promise. Day is a member of the Upper Skagit tribe and the book takes place in both Seattle and the Suquamish ancestral lands. This book will be read aloud and discussed in 6th and 7th grade Social Studies and Language Arts classes. We are also setting up a Village Books pre-sale prior to the author visit.

Mood Meter for Parents

As you might know, we use a social emotional curriculum called RULER, from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The Mood Meter is an important part of the RULER curriculum. Our students know the Mood Meter well and they can explain how to use it. Families can use the Mood Meter at home. You could even try modeling this with your kids this weekend: Tell your child how you are feeling and then you and your student can identify the "mood" on the Mood Meter. If you have time, you can explain why you are in that "mood" and where you want to go next. There is also a really helpful Mood Meter app you can download for free.

Meta Moment

Another useful part of our RULER curriculum is the Meta Moment. Adults and students use the Meta Moment to help direct their emotions in a useful way.

  1. Sense: Notice a change in your body or mind.
  2. Pause: Wait to respond. Breathe to think more clearly.
  3. See your best self: Imagine your best self in a situation.
  4. Strategize and Act: Think of a strategy, and try it out.

Confetti Slaw Recipe

We've finished our December recipe "Confetti Slaw: with incredible success! Coleslaw comes from the Dutch word koolsla meaning “cabbage salad.” Cabbage is December’s Harvest of the Month vegetable for its ability to grow well during this colder month and its high vitamin A and K content. Our Confetti Slaw recipe is based on a menu item offered in Bellingham School lunches. Students learn to "chiffonade" the cabbage and leafy greens (an efficient technique for cutting leaves into very small pieces), shred carrots, and create their own vinaigrette with olive oil, rice vinegar, and seasonings. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact Kulshan's Common Threads Food Educator: ruby@commonthreadsfarm.org - For more information please visit www.commonthreadsfarm.org

Lost and Found Clothing & Lunch Boxes

Be sure to stop by KMS and grab your Lost & Found items! We have many lunch bags, coats, and sweatshirts in our Lost and Found. We recommend that parents write their student's name clearly on the outside or inside of their lunch box and clothing items. This helps us reunite students and items. Please check our Lost and Found Area in the Commons. Our PTSA donates Lost and Found items to local charities every 4-5 weeks. Thank you!

KMS Account at Wee Ones Reruns

We have created a consignment account at Wee Ones ReRuns (next to Trader Joes) for Kulshan Middle School. You can request that your Wee Ones proceeds go to Kulshan Middle School’s account. Our school will get the credit for the items that sell. (They will give us 40% of the sale price of each item, which goes towards our KMS PTSA.) Our account code is K945 but if you forget, they have this on file. A special thank you to parent Teddi Johnson Anshus, our Kulshan Clothing Closet Coordinator.
