Welcome Back Edition - August 2021

A Message from Mrs. Haymark

Vogel Texan Families,


Our Meet the Teacher Event is this coming Monday, August 9th. It's a come and go staggered event. 6th grade students and families come between 4:30pm-6:00pm while 5th grade students and families come between 5:30pm-7:00pm. We will have games outside on the front lawn as well as Chick-fil-A, sno-cones, and school t-shirts for purchase. In an effort to keep the number of people inside our building to a minimum we are requesting that only one parent/family member escort each student to their classroom. All other attending the event are welcome to enjoy the fun outside. It's been so long since we have been able to host an event for our school community. We couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to meet you all!

Meet the Teacher Parking

Parents will be able to utilize Oak Ridge Transportation Center's parking lot. Signs will be posted to assist parents in finding the entrance to this lot, which is just to the west of the back parking lot entrance of Vogel.

***Don't Forget... Verification of Student Registration***

You should have received an email from "NoReplyConroeISD" with the subject line "Verification of Student Registration" on the week of July 5th. You will need to complete the online forms before our Meet the Teacher event on Monday, August 9th. If you have not completed the forms, you will be asked to complete them before heading back to meet your child's teacher. If you have moved you will be asked to submit a new proof of residency. You can email srandall@conroeisd.net any current electric, water, or gas bill in the parent/guardian's name to prove your residency. Please call the school if you have questions.

First Day of School Reminders

Parking: Are you planning on taking a picture of your child outside of Vogel on the morning of August 11th? Parents may park in the front or back lot of the school. Additional parking will be available where we normally line up for car riders. The Vogel car rider line entrance is located next to the entrance of the Transportation Department and signs will be in place to assist you in finding the entrance. Parents will be allowed to park in the right lane only. Please leave the left lane open for those arriving or departing. We will have CISD police on duty during our morning arrival and afternoon dismissal to help the traffic flow smoothly.


Walking students to class: In an effort to keep the number of people inside our building to a minimum we are requesting that only one parent/family member escort each student to their classroom.

Car Rider Line

All cars coming from Hanna or Maplewood all access the car rider line near the transportation building. There is no left or right turn into the school drive when traveling on Geffert Wright. All cars entering the drive must cross over Geffert Wright from car rider line across the street from the school. Please refer to picture below.

Parent Access

The most frequently asked question we get at the beginning of the year is how can I help my child be successful in intermediate school. The transition to intermediate can be challenging for some kiddos. The best thing a parent can do to support their child is to help them build organizational systems. Some students have trouble juggling the increased number of teachers and assignments. Help your child get into the routine of checking for work inside their flexi-folder every night. Look at graded assignments that are sent home to see if there are concepts your child is struggling to master. And sign up for a Parent Access account to monitor your child's grades. If you see zeros or "Z"s in the gradebook, it means that your child has not turned in their assignment. Encourage them to complete the work and turn it in. It's never too late to turn work in or too early to start building good study habits. If you don't have a Parent Access account CLICK HERE to register. Your involvement in their education is important. If you have questions on how else you can support your child, please reach out to your child's teacher or one of our school counselors.

Message from Our Nurse Mrs. Coyne

We're close to the start of the 2021-22 school year! Your school nurses wanted to remind you of a few things we'll need before the first day of school so that we can keep all students healthy, safe, and ready to learn :)

  • If your child has a life-threatening health condition (Asthma, Severe Allergy requiring an Epi-pen, Seizure, Diabetes) please be sure to bring in your child's care plan and medication to the school clinic before the first day of school.
  • Please provide the clinic with updated immunization records throughout the school year. Remember 6th graders need to have their Tdap and MCV4 vaccines before 7th grade.
  • If your child will require medications at school, we must have medication forms signed by the parent/guardian and medication in the original container before we can administer medication at school.

COVID Protocols

The biggest mitigation strategy we can put into place this school year is to encourage students, parents, and staff to stay home when they are sick. It's going to take all of us to ensure our kiddos are safe while inside our building. Please do not come to school or send your child to school if you are feeling under the weather. Reach out to your child's teacher, our nurse, or our counselor with questions or specific needs.


Classrooms: Students will be encouraged to sanitize/clean hands. Classrooms and common areas will be sanitized regularly.


Cafeteria:

Students - Students will be spread out as much as possible during all lunches. They will be provided an ID badge with a bar code used to purchase lunches to avoid using a keypad. Hand sanitizer will be provided in cafeteria and student will be encouraged wash/sanitize before and after lunch.


Parents - All visitors eating with students will be seated at a separate table away from other children. The number of visitors will be limited to the amount of seating available. In an effort to get our lunch room procedures up and running, visitors will be asked to wait until the week of August 30th to join their student for lunch.


Transitions: Students will be encouraged to space themselves out as far as possible when transitioning between classes, specials, and lunch.


Water Bottles: Vogel has three no-touch water bottle refilling stations in all schools. We are asking for all students to bring a refillable water bottle to school with them. Please clearly write your child's first and last name on their water bottle with permanent marker. Students will be allowed to bring their water bottles to all their classes, fine arts, PE, and lunch.


Masks: At this time masks are optional, no adult or student will be required to wear a mask. However, all who enter our building are encouraged to wear a mask. We will have masks in the front office for students and adults who wish to wear one, but forgot them at home. If you have specific questions about masks, please let your child's teachers know. They are happy to help!


COVID Notices and Contact Tracing: If a student in our building reports a positive test result, classroom and general notifications will continue to be sent out. Specific contact tracing and mandatory quarantines will not take place this school year. If you have specific questions about your child's risks, please contact our school nurse, Susan Coyne @ scoyne@conroeisd.net or 832-663-4309.


School Leveling System: The district is working on a leveling system based on positive cases. This will help guide administration on implementing additional protocols to help ensure all of our students are safe while they are in our building.

State News

During the recent legislative session, Senate Bill 1697 established new Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.02124, Parental Option for Student Retention, which allows parents or guardians to opt to have their child:

  • repeat prekindergarten;

  • enroll in prekindergarten if the child was eligible to enroll in prekindergarten in the previous school year, under TEC, §29.153(b), and has not yet enrolled in kindergarten;

  • repeat kindergarten;

  • enroll in kindergarten if the child would have enrolled in kindergarten in the previous school year and has not yet enrolled in first grade;

  • for grades one through three, repeat the grade the student was enrolled in the previous school year;

  • for grades four through eight, repeat the grade the student was enrolled in during the 2020-2021 school year; and

  • for courses taken for high school credit, repeat any course in which the student was enrolled during the 2020-2021 school year.
