First Grade News!
Welcome to the last four weeks of school.
Announcements:
Friday is also a half-day and dismissal is at 12:00 p.m. Please be on time to pick up your children. Memorial day weekend will include Monday so we will see the students back on Tuesday!
Birthdays: Adrienne Soltero just celebrated her 7th birthday last Friday and America is celebrating hers this week on Friday. Please note that America's birthday party location was changed and your child should have taken a slip of paper home today noting the new location and time for her party. If you didn't receive it, let me know and I will e-mail you the address and location. Happy Birthday!!!!!
Thank you to the parents who drove to the Science Dome last Friday. We are planning an end of the year picnic at Titlow park. Date and time is still pending confirmation.
Curriculum News:
There are signposts that lead us to dishonesty, selfishness or Kindness. Which one will get us to heaven. The children illustrated their footsteps along the path they choose to take that insures them everlasting life with Jesus.
Math: This week we are learning ways to add a 2 digit number to a one digit number and using place value charts to illustrate how to solve the problems. This is done also using number bonds. We will continue doing the same in subtraction problems without regrouping. Next week we will be regrouping and adding numbers up to 40.
Social Studies: The children are learning about ASIA! They working on a map at our geography center where they are cutting out pictures from old National Geographic magazines that depict life in India, China, Russia, and Japan. They are learning about the different cultures, languages and main landmarks related to each.
Science: We are completing our unit on Natural Disasters with a lesson about tornadoes and what we can do to protect ourselves.
Reading:
Superkids are learning about adding y to words to form adjectives. Wind-windy
They are also learning to add -y as an ending to words that have only one vowel and one consonant by doubling the last consonant. mud-muddy. Words that have two vowels together just add y . rain- rainy
Senderos: The genre is biographies. Learning about timelines in people's lives. Children continue to write question sentences. In phonics they are learning about "consonanticos" = mp, nv, mb in words like (bombero, ambos- empezar, campo- invita-envase. Escritura narrativa- Sentences that talk about themselves in their writing journals.
