Duneland School news for parents, students and teachers
December 13, 2018 Vo. 53 No. 6
A Message from our School Board President...
Dear Duneland Community,
With the recent retirement of our school Superintendent, I would like to take this opportunity to express to the community that the Duneland School Corporation will continue to provide an exceptional learning experience to all our students and is excited to move forward.
While the loss of our Superintendent is disappointing, we look at this as an opportunity to improve on all of the school district’s achievements, including the recent improvements to the Corporation’s structure and curriculum.
Duneland possesses the best teachers, staff, students and parents, and all will continue to strive for excellence in their day to day activities as we go through this transition period. The process of finding an interim Superintendent has already begun, and our search for a highly-qualified permanent candidate will begin shortly.
We greatly appreciate the community’s support while we move forward, and we would like to wish you and your families a blessed Christmas and joyous New Year.
Sincerely,
John R. Marshall, President
Duneland School Board of Trustees
Make-up eLearning Structure for November 26, 2018 Inclement Weather Day
The Duneland School Corporation will utilize an eLearning structure for the inclement weather day on November 26, 2018. The eLearning process was determined to provide our students and teachers a range of days in which assignments are completed and graded. This range will take place from Monday, December 17, 2018 through Friday, January 4, 2019. Students will be in school during the entire school week of Dec. 17-21.
Student assignments for the make-up day will be posted by teachers in Canvas at 8:00 a.m on Monday, December 17, 2018. Attendance is based on completion of the tasks given to students by their teachers. Assignments can be completed and submitted as early as Monday, December 17, 2018, but the official due date for all assignments will be Friday, January 4, 2019 at 8:00 a.m.
During the eLearning window, students will have the opportunity to receive support from their teachers via Canvas. Students can contact their teachers during available teacher posted office hours through Canvas chat or messaging.

SATURDAY - CHS Book Fair at Barnes and Noble
The Chesterton High School (CHS) Library will host their annual book fair at the Valparaiso Barnes & Noble on Saturday, December 15 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. CHS students are doing a great job putting together activities, including a mask-making station, Marvel trivia, and a tribute to Stan Lee.
This annual book fair is the Library's main fundraiser. A percentage of Barnes & Noble's sales during the fair comes back to the Library (as long as you tell the cashier you want your purchase to count toward our fair).
This money is used to help keep the CHS Makerspace stocked with consumables for teachers and students to use, to provide refreshments at Library movie nights, and to purchase materials for all the enrichment activities the Library hosts. After the Reading Marathon (usually in February), monies are also used to help supplement the book donations made to local charities.
Come to Barnes & Noble during the book fair, all your purchases (including Cafe purchases!) will count toward the CHS Library total.
Patrons can also shop at barnesandnoble.com from Saturday, December 15 - Saturday December 22 and use the book fair ID# 12392619.
The high school students and staff will also offer complimentary gift wrapping at Barnes & Noble from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Chesterton High School Food Drive
Chesterton High School annual food drive was a success! This year's Duneland School Drive saw incredible generosity and participation from our entire community with a 25-foot box truck filled with canned goods and non-perishable items being delivered to the Westchester Neighbors Food Pantry.
The physical amount of items donated this year to the Pantry was staggering, requiring well over an hour of labor just to unload; much less to sort and shelve. In addition to the canned food, other food items and toiletries, the drive collected close to $2,000 for the Pantry. This money is used to purchase meats, fresh and frozen fruits, vegetables and other perishables that are very important for the community.
The kind volunteers at the Food Pantry were very touched by the generosity of our District's students, parents and staff, and stated that this year's drive "was one of, if not the LARGEST EVER!" I was told that we likely supplied enough food items to sustain the Food Pantry well into the early Spring!
Special thanks to the district's Maintenance Department staff members and high school students representing various clubs and teams such as Girl's Softball, Interact Club and National Honor Society who assist with the loading and transporting the food to the Pantry.
