The Awesome 'Mini' Team

What's Going on in MATH!!

We just finished the unit on exponent rules with many supporting Khan Academy videos for both parents and students to stay on top of things. We had the exponent unit test on Tuesday. There have been regular concept checks in class to provide quick feedback for students and teacher (3-5 questions). Progress updates were handed out last week. As always, students are able to re-take their unit tests, but must meet with Kim or Rich after school before they do the re-take.

What does Jackie say??

In science, students have completed the Lithosphere Unit. In this unit, students explored the concept of density through activities and lab inquiry. Students were then asked to apply the concept to the layers of the Earth. Further study of the layers of the Earth, students were posed the question, "How do we know what we know"? In this section, students were challenged to explain how direct evidence, meteorites, volcanoes, and seismology allow scientists to explain what is beneath the Earth's crust. Finally, the theories of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics were introduced. Students were asked to cite evidence and explain the mechanisms that move the lithosphere.
Currently, students are striving to understand Newton's Laws of motion. Students recently completed a series of activities to explore each law and are composing songs to master the vocabulary. More on Newton's Laws to come...
Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving!

Things are moving along nicely in Humanities. We are wrapping up our "How do people gain, maintain, and use power?" unit now that we have finished reading Lord of the Flies and studying the election. After Thanksgiving, we begin our "How do people turn hope for a better future into a reality?" unit by reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and studying ways to get involved in the political process to affect change. This unit will culminate in a debate and a persuasive letter to the editor. Check out 9b for info about what we do in class each day and to download documents.

DIVISION 1 Exhibition !!!!

We will soon unveil the Division 1 Exhibition and what will be expected from students.

The Division 1 Exhibition is a compiliation of their 9th and 10th grade work that students will reflect upon in order to show their growth as learners. The exhibition will culminate at the end of their Sophomore year where they will present their work and discuss themselves as learners. Students will be asked to bring in a 2 inch 3 ring binder that will house all of their work. So ask your kids all about it!!!
