The Cat's Connection

October

On Target!

After the first month of school, we have seen just exactly what we had hoped. Kids are engaged, kids are working together, and our teachers are working to foster the right kind of environment for these two things to happen. The focus of our inservice work was getting our students to be active learners, and the first month provided many examples of how our teachers and students are right on target! Our Open House & Exhibition Night next week will highlight some of these activities, and I am hoping that many of you be able to attend at some point during the evening.

As unbelievable as it may seem, November is just around the corner, which means it's just about time for parent-teacher conferences. Conference time is not only a good time to review students' academic work, but equally important it's an opportunity to come together to help our kids work through any challenges they might be having. We value our partnership with parents and look forward to being able to connect with you to ensure success for our kids. Come mid-November, we will contact you with information about scheduling a conference.

I appreciate our students, our parents, our community, and our staff. We have a lot of good things going on at LaCreole, and it's because of the genuine effort of everyone involved. Thank you for being a part of what's happening at LaCreole Middle School!

See you at Open House & Exhibition Night!

Open House and Exhibition Night -- Tuesday, October 25, 6-8 p.m.

This year we have moved our traditional open house to a little later in the Fall -- October 25. This has allowed our teachers and students get to know each other a little better and has provided time in our classes to develop learning projects to exhibit. We have a lot to show off and look forward to seeing you all!

Site Council Needs You!

We have an opening for a parent on our Site Council. Site Council works to develop plans to improve professional growth of staff, improve the school's instructional programs, and discuss and recommend changes that might positively impact our school. Our Site Council meets quarterly for about an hour each meeting. To be a member of Site Council as a parent, you must have a current LaCreole student. The commitment is for a three-year term (or until you no longer have a student at LaCreole). If you are interested in serving on this committee, please complete the attached form. Once we have a list of interested parents, we will put together a ballot with voting scheduled for early November.

The Comedy of Terrors - Fall Play

The fall play, The Comedy of Terrors, runs from October 27-29. The evening shows are October 27, 28, & 29 at 7 p.m. in the LaCreole Cafeteria. General admission is $5; students and seniors $3. There will be a matinee October 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the matinee are $1 less. The show is based on Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors." It has updated language and takes place in a middle school on Halloween.

Wildcat Pride Spirit Wear

At LaCreole we celebrate Fridays by declaring them "Wildcat Pride" days. We have some fresh new spirit wear on sale now at school. We have them available in our office and will soon be selling them out of the Cat's Den. The cost is $8.

Homework Club Begins!

Beginning on October 26, Homework Club will be offered once a week after school on Wednesdays. Students interested will meet in the library from approximately 3:30 to 4:10. No prior sign up is necessary. All students are welcome with an expectation that those participating are focused on homework for the duration of our time together. Teacher support will be provided for any students requesting additional assistance. A light meal will also be offered.

If you have any further questions, please email the Homework Club coordinator, Michele Schilling, at Michele.Schilling@dsd2.org.

Physical Education - New 3-day Unit

We are excited in the PE department as we have developed a new three-day unit for female students that combines tumbling with some self-defense education. The focus is on students using situational awareness and skills to avoid and escape threatening situations.

Notes From Our Counseling Center

LaCreole Middle School's counselor, Kayce Lilley, is here to support students’ academic, social, and emotional needs. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. If Ms. Lilley is unavailable, students may request an appointment in the Counseling Center. Parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Hays, registrar, to schedule an appointment: 503-623-6663.

Things to know to help your student be successful in middle school:

Tips for Parent Survival:

Box Tops for Education

Help support our school! We are collecting Box Tops! This year there's an added incentive -- for every Walmart-exclusive Box Top we clip and collect until November 2, our school earns a chance to be one of 20 winners of a bonus 50,000 Box Tops, which means a possible $5,000 for our school! We have a school-wide competition going as well, with the winning class earning a popcorn party. Kids should put their Box Tops in a baggie with their name on it and turn them in to the main office.

Emergency Preparedness

This year a focus of our district will be emergency preparedness. It is our hope to communicate a clear message to all involved of how to respond if and when we are faced with emergencies of any kind. Attached is a letter from our superintendent explaining our district's strategy, which will be communicated frequently in the coming months. As a school, LaCreole is currently not scheduled this year to participate in an evacuation simulation, but plans for future exercises are underway.
