Explanation of 'Prevent Waste'

The ability of chemists to redesign chemical transformations to minimize the generation of hazardous waste is an important first step to prevent pollution within the environment. Through the prevention of waste generation, we minimize hazards connected with waste storage, transportation and treatment. This principle is a chemical process used to prevent waste, rather than treat it or clean it up after it is formed.

The benefits eg. economic, environmental etc. of using this process

Economically, reducing the amount of waste in chemical processes, decreases the amount of chemicals lost which are bought in the first place. Preventing waste by coming up with ways to minimize the chemicals used to produce a product, generally saves money for industries and manufacturers.

Environmentally, reducing and preventing waste can decrease the demand for environmental resources to produce as much product to be used in chemical process, as they would not need as much. Preventing waste can save energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helps keep the environment sustainable as their will be less use of raw materials and allows products to be used to their fullest extent.

Application of 'Prevent Waste' in a chemical industry context

The pharmaceutical industry developed a second-generation green synthesis of sitagliptin, an active ingredient used to treat type 2 diabetes. This lead to an enzymatic process that reduces waste, improves yield and safety, and eliminates the need for a metal catalyst. This reduction, through research, suggests that the new bio-catalysts will be useful in manufacturing other drugs as well.
