NEWS AND INFO FOR SLATER STAFF 2.10
"Culturally Responsive & Responsible: Values students' unique cultural backgrounds, knowledge and experiences and utilizes them in designing the lesson; plans multiple connections to issues of diversity, equity, social-consciousness and inclusion in a respectful and developmentally appropriate manner."
Reflecting on the video above and our own experiences, we know that in order to reach this goal of being a culturally responsive and responsible school, we MUST look beyond textbooks and standards. Think about how you can make your instruction and classroom culturally relevant. Any person who invites any administrator to visit your class to see these practices in action will win an awesome prize!

Project plans and Entry Events should be complete by this week.
To do:
Ensure that project calendars are complete.
This week we helped to build bridges by sending 124 messages to families. This was an increase over previous weeks. 18 photos and videos went home giving us a great opportunity for growth next week. Unfortunately we fell below our positive feedback goal of 90% finishing the week with 87% positive feedback!
Remember ClassDojo usage is a school wide initiative! We want all grade levels to leverage ClassDojo’s functionality to promote student and parent feedback. Please reach out to any parents that have not connected with your ClassDojo. Contact Ms. Woods if you need additional support. Every teacher should have only 5 skills (3 schoolwide + 1 class custom + 1 grade level custom) weighted at 1 point. The same 5 skill should be reflected in “Needs Work” and weighted at 0 points. Set a goal for posting to your class story next week in addition to a personal messaging goal to families.

Culture and Safety Reminders
Our next fire drill will be February 13th at 2:45.
Remember, students sent outside of your room for any reason, MUST have hall passes.
Keep in mind we can never put students out of the classroom or invite students to leave.
A teacher to teacher hand-off is required for all enrichment transitions. Classroom teachers please ensure that all of your students are in a classroom before departing.
Remember, students can not be effectively supervised from the top of the hill. Please select an area of the field for a better vantage point and proximity. If kids are down the hill playing, you should be as well.
Remember that the punitive withholding of recess must be approved in advance by administration.

Culture Resource of the Week
Safety is our most important responsibility as educators. The term loco parentis, Latin for "in the place of a parent" refers to the legal responsibility we take on everyday as we assume the functions and responsibilities of a parent. This week's video entitled "Leave No Child Unattended! Use Active Supervision to Keep Children Safe" is quite longer than our usual resource (30 minutes) but it provides a thorough review of best practices that can bolster the daily mandate we have to actively supervise and keep students safe.
