Wonderful job with testing this week. Thanks for keeping our expectations high.

Kudos to our wonderful students. I received three compliments this week regarding our students' behavior. This is due to your wonderful modeling.

Adios to Katie Yeagle! Her last day (pending no surprises) will be late next week. Cheri Weisner will take over for a week and then Victoria Skinner (no relation to Cathy Skinner) will take her long term maternity leave. Victoria is currently taking a maternity leave at Edgewood and after that wraps up, she'll be with us until Katie's return.

Congratulations to our spelling bee winners! Great job preparing our amazing students and great job to Doug, Vicki, and Maggie for facilitating.

Thank you to our awesome ELL/bilingual staff for their facilitation of the ACCESS testing. Here's kudos worthy of repeating from Linda and Lydia:

Just wanted to say WOW! The Calkins writing is really stickin’ with students. Typically the ACCESS writing test is the most stressful to administer, watch, etc. The kids are ROCKING it and many aspects of your instruction are clearly visible in their product! Some even wrote in 2 columns rather than across the page. Also visible are ellipses, words that “pop”, dialogue, etc.

Yay YOU!!!!!!

Thank you to our SpEd team and many others for assisting in the preparations for PARCC. You are a first-class team!

Message from Liz...

Please read below as there have been some changes in how on-demands will be administered this quarter.

· On-demands should be administered next week to coincide with the end of the quarter

· The paper used for the on-demand should reflect the paper used throughout the unit

· Teachers have raised concerns about a lack of time to revise/edit. Therefore, you are able to give the on demand on one day and then give 45 minutes the next day for students to revise/edit.

·Please remember to read the prompt the night before when necessary (information and opinion/argument)

· K-2, please monitor your students as they write and determine whether you want to scribe on a sticky note so you can reference it when scoring student writing.

For more information, please refer to the On Demand Performance Assessment Teacher Information document.

Benchmark Testing Continues Next Week...

Benchmark testing allows us to determine how students are responding to our core curriculum and instruction and to Tier II and Tier III interventions. The testing gives us an indication as to the growth students have made and whether students are on track for college and career readiness. I will be checking results as they come in. The next couple weeks of testing should not be taken lightly. Please adhere to the following expectations:

  • Please communicate to students the purpose of the assessments. Tell them what they will be tested on and why it's important for you as their teacher.
  • Send me your STAR Reading and Math scheduled times if you have not done so.
  • Notify me immediately if a student needs to re-take a test (for whatever reason). Remember, it needs to be taken the same day. However, a break will be required.
  • Offer students brain breaks prior to the testing.
  • Find a quiet place for make-ups. If you need assistance with this, please let me know.
  • Communicate the importance of the testing to your students. They use Chromes quite regularly now, so they may not realize the impact these assessments have. Set clear expectations for the testing period (i.e. no talking, no walking around, etc. However, encourage quiet brain breaks).
  • Walk around the classroom during testing. Do not use your phone, computer, or sit at your desk while students are taking the STAR test.

Notes and Reminders

  • Please complete the 5Essentials survey (for certified staff) and let me know when it is complete.
  • The math grade-level meetings with Rachel have been rescheduled for the week of January 26th during PLCs.
  • Third through Six Grade Teachers: Please make sure to continue to expose your students to the PARCC practice tests. Thanks!
  • As a reminder, mid-year goal reflections are due by January 30th.
  • Grades are due February 10th.
