(Recap) Youth Praise Nov. 3 // Christian Fails - Messing up Jesus
Sunday we covered the doctrine of Jesus - and in particular the Lordship of Jesus. Our conclusion was that Jesus actually claimed to be God, the biblical writers called him God, the early church Christians, and non-Christians called and recognized him as God...therefore Jesus ought to be worshipped, honored, and followed as God in the flesh. We concluded at the end of the talk that if Jesus really is Lord, then YOU have to do something about it.
- You cannot be indifferent to Jesus
- You cannot be partial to Jesus
- He demands all of your loyalty and fealty.
We discussed the faulty understanding of anything less than ultimate surrender with the students. Arianism and Jehovah Witnesses both claim that Jesus was the highest created being and is a sort of god but not God. This goes contrary to everything we mentioned above and what this does is it lessens the demands of lordship and I would say makes worshipping Jesus a violation of the first command. What we do today is we become functional Arians by not really treating Jesus as Lord and not treating him as such in our daily lives. Jesus really just becomes an optional thing we add to our lives and he really doesn't have much say in our morality, our time, our schedule, etc.
Leaders, it would be good to follow up with the students (and maybe the parents) to see what kind of Jesus they are worshipping. Because if they truly do want to worship the Jesus of Scripture, there's much more to it than how we typically treat him. And here's the key, to treat Jesus as Lord and to follow Him as God and to give up everything to chase Him is not only right and proper, but it is safe and life-giving and that is what is at stake. Kanye made his stance and his life is actually reflecting it. Make fun of him all you want, at least he is professing with his mouth and living it out with his actions that Jesus is King.
Topic of Discussion for Our Next Adult Leaders Meeting - Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage
So what we're going to do is when we get together, we'll discuss our findings and try to come to a fair consensus decision. Here's where to start:
- Matthew 19:1-12
- 1 Corinthians 7:10-16
Some questions to think through:
- What is Jesus & Paul saying about this topic? How do they treat these topics?
- What do you do with the "exception" clause?
- If a youth asks, would you permit divorce? If yes, why? and for what reason(s)? Also, if you say "yes" are they allowed to remarry? If not, why?
- What is the purpose of marriage? Is marriage a covenant or a contract? Between who(m)?
- How would you counsel a student whose parents are seeking a divorce? remarriage?
This isn't going to be an easy discussion friends but it's extremely necessary. Do some homework and let's chat in a month.
What in the world is "Cancel Culture?"
A modern internet phenomenon where a person is ejected from influence or fame by questionable actions. It is caused by a critical mass of people who are quick to judge and slow to question. It is commonly caused by an accusation, whether that accusation has merit or not. It is a direct result of the ignorance of people caused communication technologies outpacing the growth in available knowledge of a person.
“Sadly he was a victim of cancel culture.

The term “canceled” “sort of spawned from YouTube,” said Ben, a high school junior in Providence, R.I. He talked about the YouTuber James Charles, who was canceled by the platform’s beauty community in May after some drama with his mentor, Tati Westbrook, also a YouTuber, and a vitamin entrepreneur. That was a big cancellation, widely covered, that helped popularize the term. Teenagers often bring it up. Ben, 17, said that people should be held accountable for their actions, whether they’re famous or not, but that canceling someone “takes away the option for them to learn from their mistakes and kind of alienates them.”
His school doesn’t have much bullying, he said, and the word carries a gentler meaning in its hallways, used in passing to tease friends. Often, the joke extends beyond people. One week, after students were debating the safety of e-cigarettes and vaping, some declared that Juul was canceled.
