Living History
This week we will be participating in the Second Annual Living History Program for Edison School! On October 15th, students will come to school and will learn in a whole new way! The students will be placed into mixed groups with classes from Kdg. to 5th Grade. They will spend the day rotating through focus lessons prepared by parents that have volunteered on our PTA Living History Team. This years focus is Haddon Township's 150th Birthday!
Caldecott WEB Project
Students should begin to locate a Caldecott book for their WEB Project. It is a good idea to do this project in stages, try not to leave the WEB project until the last minute. (This will cause much stress for both you and your Second Grader!) Pace yourselves and give your child time to be creative and enjoy completing the project at their own rate. Remember you can turn in the project at any time, however it is due November 13th.
Literacy
Throughout our first unit, we are learning about different kinds of communities and the families who live there. This week, we meet Camila in the informational text My Family. Camila is a real girl who shares special times and happy celebrations with her family. We will also read Family Poems, poetry about families. As we read, we will be exploring answers to the question “How are families alike and different?”

Writing Focus: Narratives
This week, 2T will continue on our narrative adventure in writing. We will begin to learn about writing fictional narratives! The students will be introduced various ways to make a positive, first impression or lead. Using dialogue, actions, questions, thoughts, thoughts and feelings, and sound effects (onamonapia) the students will practice writing a memorable introduction which raises questions and curiosity. The students will also learn how to add elaborate details to their stories. By answering questions, they will have interesting ideas and opinions to describe an object or location.
We will also write our first of many Birthday Books. Each student will write a page of good wishes and compliments for the special birthday student!
Social Studies:
Math
Back It Up!
After taking a pre-assessment for Chapter 2, I learned that the students need some background experiences with adding 2 digit numbers. So, we are going to spend some time this week learning about addition and subtraction strategies to 40. We will also learn about adding and subtracting 2 digit number with and without regrouping. We will be deviating from our Second Grade Math in Focus book and following some First Grade lessons from Math in Focus to prepare students for 3 digit addition and subtraction to 1,000.
These lessons center on:
Subtracting by counting back and grouping into 10's.
Adding by:
Counting on from the greater number
Using a place value chart to add ones and add tens

Using a place value chart to add two 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping
