East End Elementary News
October 10, 2022
Dear East End Families,
I hope each of you are enjoying the long weekend! I am sharing this week’s East End Elementary News on Monday for all that would like to read ahead and prepare for the upcoming week.
October continues to be a busy month at East End. It is my hope that this newsletter will keep all East End families informed with our upcoming events. Hope you can join us for our next Schoology session for parents and students on Thursday, October 13th at 6:00 in the school’s cafeteria. It will be great for parents to bring your child, his or her charged Chromebook and join us for this next session. Great feedback was shared from our first session. Thanks to the East End School Improvement Council for their support and encouragement for these sessions.
This week also has a parent conference afternoon, the first meeting of the EEE Choir with Mrs. Stockton, swimming lessons for second graders, EEE Skating Night, Crazy Socks and Shoes Spirit Day. Amazon Prime SMILE Day with our EEE PTO, and our last session of volunteer training on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Our PTO has lots of things in store this month. Please note the events included in this newsletter.
See everyone back at school on Wednesday. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
As always, thank you for your support of East End Elementary.

GT Performance Information About Second Grade Testing October 17 - 21, 2022
September 30, 2022
Dear Second Grade Parents,
Many of you have asked how a child qualifies for services in GT for third grade based on the testing that will have beginning on October 14th. The testing takes place during the second grade year in preparation for the third grade placement.
The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) score alone will qualify a child for GT beginning in third grade if their score is 96% or higher. The information from our training for the administering of the testing shares:
• “Students may be eligible for placement into the district Gifted and Talented program on the basis of their aptitude score alone.
• A composite score on the CogAT® at or above the 96th national age percentile.
Students can also qualify for services in GT based on 2 of 3 dimensions which include:
• Students are also identified for services by demonstrating high performance in two of the following dimensions:
• Dimension A (Reasoning Abilities)
• Dimension B (High Achievement in Reading and/or Mathematics)
• Dimension C (Intellectual/Academics)
These scores are further explained by:
• Dimension A – COGAT aptitude (93rd national age percentile) in one or more of the following areas:
- verbal/linguistic
- quantitative/mathematical
- nonverbal
- and/or a composite of the three
• Dimension B – IOWA achievement (94th percentile and above)
• Dimension C –Score of 16 on either the verbal or nonverbal component of the Performance Task Assessments (This assessment is administered as a re-test for students who do not qualify during the original testing in 2nd grade, but have a qualifying score in Dimension A or B that indicates they can participate in the Performance Tasks Assessment.)
This is further explained by the following,
• If a student meets the criteria for Dimensions A and B, the student qualifies for Gifted & Talented services without taking the Performance Tasks Assessment.
• If a student meets the criteria for Dimensions A or B, but not both, the student will take the Performance Tasks Assessment.
The Performance Task Assessments will be administered in the spring based on the scores of students who meet the requirement for Dimension A or B, but do not meet the requirement for both. GT placement begins in 3rd grade. Parents are notified at the conclusion of the second grade year if their child qualifies for GT placement to begin in 2022-2023.
Sincerely,
Tammy Day, principal
Second Grade Testing For CogAT and ITBS On October 17 - 21, 2022
Dear Second Grade Parents,
Our East End second graders will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) and ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) beginning Monday, October 17th. Second grade students throughout the state of South Carolina are required by the state to participate in an aptitude test (CogAT) and an achievement test (ITBS) to identify the students for gifted and talented classes that will begin in the third grade. The School District of Pickens County will be administering these tests Monday, October 17th - Friday, October 21st.
There are several subtests included in the testing. The schedule of subtests is as follows:
October 17 - Verbal Battery (CogAT)
October 18 – Quantitative Battery (CogAT)
October 19 - NonVerbal Battery (CogAT)
October 20- Reading (Iowa)
October 21 – Math (Iowa)
The screening process for gifted and talented identification is a multi-step process. The first part of that process begins with the administration of the ITBS and the CogAT. These scores provide us information to help in selection for our gifted and talented program, which begins in 3rd grade, as well as gives us important information about the students' aptitude and achievement as measured by each of these tests.
There is no special preparation for each day’s testing. The most important thing is for students to be well-rested. Parents are asked to ensure that students have a full night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast each morning, and arrive to school on time. A breakfast that includes some type of protein seems to help students concentrate better than a breakfast of sugary foods. It is important that students arrive at school on time especially during testing. Research also shows that hydration is important, too. Having plenty of fluids is important for the brain to be able to be alert and allow each child to do his or her best.
Thank you for your help as we administer these tests to our students. A reminder that there is no special preparation. Students need to have a “Can Do” attitude and arrive to school with a full night’s sleep. We will remind them at school to do their best and not worry about the test. Our district’s GT Coordinator will confirm student placements in May 2023 as the GT scoring process is completed.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school.
We will be glad to assist you.
Sincerely,
Tammy Day, principal

YMCA Swimming Lessons for 2nd Graders Update
Original Article:
We are very excited to share with you the good news that the School District of Pickens County and the Pickens County YMCA have partnered together again to offer free swimming classes during the school day for our second graders for eight weeks beginning October 6th – December 2nd. Two of our second grade classes will go for lessons on Thursdays each week and the other two classes will go for lessons on Fridays each week. Mrs. McKenzie's Class and Mrs. Dove's Class will go on Thursdays. Mrs. Nix Class and Mrs. Garner's Class will go on Fridays. Our lessons will take place at the indoor pool at the Pickens YMCA location. We'll send more information out soon for second grade parents for information and also for parents to give permission for these lessons. Students will be transported via district buses each week. There is no cost to the students for participation in the swimming lessons. In addition to the YMCA swimming instructors and lifeguards, EEE faculty sill accompany the students each week to the lessons. We are thrilled to have this opportunity again for our students. Second grade parents, permission slips and release forms from the YMCA will come home this week.
