St. Columba Catholic School - News every Friday - 10/23/20
I hope all of you had a wonderful and well-deserved day off with your students. They have been working really hard and it is a nice way to end our first quarter. Our K-8 teachers had a great day of learning and professionally growing. In talking with the teachers, many of them are excited to implement new strategies, resources, and methods to better support our students and improve their educational experience even more! Our Preschool teachers had a busy day of transitioning our outdoor classrooms into their homes for the rest of the year in our old Kindergarten classroom. While we will still put our outdoor spaces to good use, we are excited to use the great indoor space for our students for the remainder of the year.
Hard to believe that we are 25% done with this school year! I am so proud of all that has happened so far, but I am really looking forward to what comes next!
This upcoming week will be a fun one! Our student council has some great plans for Red Ribbon Week (see info below) and we will end the week with our Halloween celebration. As a reminder, all K-8 students should bring a small pumpkin to school on or before Friday for our decorating contest!
Finally, on Friday, Report Cards for the 1st Quarter will be sent home. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be the following week.
Here is a look ahead at the upcoming events on campus:
- Monday, October 26: All Preschool Wizard of Oz costumes due; Pledge to Be Drug Free Day
- Tuesday, October 27:
- Wednesday, October 28: Red Accessories or Red Free Dress for $1; Door Decorating Contest Judged
- Thursday, October 29:
- Friday, October 30: Preschool Halloween Celebration (10:15am); K-8 Halloween Celebration and Pumpkin Decorating (after lunch)
Blessings,
Mr. Amann
Halloween Plans
Halloween Celebrations will happen on Friday!
For all students, you may wear your costumes to school. Please no masks (other than the ones we normally wear now), no weapons, no blood or gore, nothing political in nature, and no inappropriate or offensive costumes.
For Preschool Families, please bring bring 45-50 wrapped candies or non-food items (stickers, pencils, halloween bubbles, etc) and give them to your child's teacher by Friday.
For K-8 Families, we are requesting that each child comes to school on or before the 30th with a Medium Sized pumpkin. Please do not spend more than $10 for the pumpkin. We will be hosting a pumpkin decorating contest. The school will provide all of the materials, but students need to bring the pumpkin.
We will also be providing candy as the students "trick or treat" from class to class. Please do not send additional candy or treats unless specified by your child's teacher.
Red Ribbon Week
Throughout the week, Student Council is hosting events to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and our school's dedication to keeping our students Drug Free!
Please see the attached flyer for details!

Exciting Preschool Announcement
Earlier this year, Mr. Amann and Ms. Lori applied for a grant through the State of California and the San Diego Foundation to further support our amazing Preschool. This grant program was rolled out in an effort to support preschools and help them stay open during this pandemic.
On Wednesday, we received notification that we were awarded $14,000! We will use these funds to help us overcome the deficit we incurred last year from COVID-19 and offset the costs of the extra cleaning supplies and instructional materials we are needing for this year!
We are so blessed!
Halloween Candy Collection
For another year, St. Columba is partnering with Casa de Los Pobres in Tijuana. The Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Queen of Peace coordinate an annual Christmas distribution where 1,700 impoverished families receive a chicken, rice, beans, canned vegetables and fruit, and a bag of candy to make Christmas festivities a little sweeter!
In order to have enough candy for the children in those families, we collect extra candy from Halloween and pass it on to Casa de Los Pobres for Christmas.
If you have any extra candy, please bring donations in Freezer Quart-Size, Ziploc bags.
We will collect extra candy through Friday, November 6th.
