Reader's Workshop
Keeping with Fairytales...
As we continue to study fairytales, students will begin to compare two different versions of these texts. Some particularly funny takes on traditional fairytales are pictured below. We will use these along with the traditional fairytales to notice similarities and differences as well as reading a completely different kind of princess story as we write "I wonder..." sticky notes about it.
Honestly, Red Riding Hood was Rotten!
Mermaids are a Joke!
No Lie, I Acted Like a Beast!
Fundations
We have made it through the ALL the lessons in FUNDATIONS! Hip-Hip-HOORAH! Wow! Our students have done so wonderful this year by working hard at learning Fundations! For the remainder of the year, the students will review the material they have learned thus far. We will start by spending a couple days at a time reviewing our vowel teams and practicing how to tap out words to spell them correctly.
Writer's Workshop
"Don't Let the Pigeon..."
This week, students will continue to write their 'Pigeon' books. As you may recall, the students have been using Mo Willem's book Don't Let the Pigeon drive the Bus as our mentor text. We have studied how he writes his books about the Pigeon and how the Pigeon persuades his audience to allow him to do something, like drive the bus. So far, there are some very interesting and funny scenarios!
Math
Review
Next week, students will continue to review in efforts to prepare for the end of the year assessment given by the county. Some topics that we will touch on specifically are partitioning rectangles and circles, drawing rows and columns within a rectangle, creating arrays as well as graphing data.
Science & Social Studies
This week, students will continue to learn more about sound. Specifically, they will focus on studying more about string instruments and how their pitches can change by tightening the strings as well as using a bridge. For the remainder of the week, students will learn how our vocal cords produce sound. As well, the second grade students will create a model to show how our vocal cords produce sound by using a rubber band and a plastic cup.
