Why should I talk to my student about School Board Policy 501, section III, sub A3?
School Board Policy 501 describes how schools keep a safe environment free of weapons. Outlined in the policy are the obvious things that outside of school students are not allowed to use or only with adult supervision, but it also covers items that fit into the category of toys.
There is the potential for a problem if a student places a toy gun or rubber knife in the pocket of their coat and then brings it to school. It can be a confusing situation for students as something they have permission to use outside of school is forbidden at school.
Please take a few minutes to talk with your child about the importance of never bringing any of the items outlined in the policy to school.

What driving practices help keep students safe before & after school?
According to the National Safe Routes to School Program, adults can enhance safety near schools by following safe driving practices. Here is an edited list (I shorted it for speed of reading, but you can see the entire list here.)
- Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits on streets and alleys in the school zones and adjacent neighborhoods.
- Comply with local school drop-off and pick-up procedures.
- Avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks to let children out of the car.
- Avoid loading or unloading children at locations across the street from the school. .
- Watch for children walking or bicycling.
- Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops or those who are late for the bus and may dart into the street.
- Watch for children walking or biking to school when backing up.
Thank you for helping to make sure that our children are safe.

What are the results of the Hy-Vee receipt collection?
In March, volunteers tabulated and submitted over $39,732 in Hy-Vee receipts from our two Mankato stores. Hy-Vee donates $1 for every $150 spent at our local stores, so that's over $264 headed our way from receipts submitted this month.
Please continue to collect your Hy-Vee receipts through June 1, 2017 and turn them in to Franklin (collection container across from school office) by the end of the school year.
Thank you to all our families who are submitting receipts and to parent volunteers, Christi Hillesheim and Jon Krueger, for tabulating the receipts.
