From the Principal
Hello, Cecilton Family,
I want to remind you of a few very important upcoming dates. Please note that we do not have school tomorrow, Monday, January 18, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This upcoming Wednesday, January 20, we have scheduled our Marking Period 3 supplies pick-up from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m in the car loop. We will have staff stationed near the car loop that day to support a safe pick-up process. Please remain in your vehicle and wear a mask. Also, on Wednesday, January 20th, we will have Frank Kros present to parents/guardians at 4 pm on How to Support Your Child Emotionally during hybrid learning. I highly encourage you to attend to hear information about this difficult time and how to continue to manage it. Finally, please note that Marking Period 2 ends on Wednesday, January 27. It is very important that you use the CCPS app, PowerSchool Parent Portal, and/or communicate with your child's teacher about progress, attendance, and the completion of graded assignments.
A new opportunity has developed for any of our CES 5th grade girls. Below, you will find information about 'Girls in STEM.' CCPS, in partnership with a few other organizations, is offering a STEM opportunity for girls in grades 5-9 on a series of Wednesday afternoons. This is a great way to engage our Gilpin students in science, technology, engineering, and math in a really fun way! Registration is required.

MLK Day of Service: A Day On, Not a Day Off
On January 18, we will observe MLK Day with a day off from school. However, we want to encourage all of our families to think of this as a "Day On, Not a Day Off", and we challenge all of our students to engage in at least one act of service on January 18th, MLK Day of Service. We have listed some ideas below that are appropriate acts of service for our students based on their age. We would LOVE to see photos of your child in action on this day! Please send any photos to mbpugh@ccps.org on Monday so we can share with others how we are all working towards building a stronger community by serving those in need!
*Submissions grant permission to share on the GMES Facebook page.
Day of Service Ideas:
- Make cards for soldiers serving overseas and send them to brighten their day.
- Perform a Random Act of Kindness in your community
- Make cards of Senior Citizens that are isolated in Nursing Homes and send them to the facility.
- Make a care package for someone working in the Health Care Field.
- Gather books you no longer use at home or purchase school supplies and donate them to a local organization.
- Gather supplies for a local animal shelter and make a donation together with your child.
- Create Birthday Boxes for a local food pantry. Include a cake mix, icing, and decorations for a birthday cake for families who might not otherwise be able to provide a birthday cake for a family member.
- The ideas are endless! We can't wait to see what our students do for MLKL Day of Service!
New Year, New You!
