READ EVERY DAY!!!!

DEAR Time: The importance of reading 20 minutes a day

Have you ever heard of DEAR time? DEAR is an acronym that stands for Drop Everything And Read! Children who read for just 20 minutes per day see 1.8 million words each year and have scores on standardized tests in the 90th percentile (because they have experienced so many words!). A small amount of reading each day makes an incredible difference! This powerful image illustrates how many minutes your child will read each school year if they read for 20 minutes a day. We encourage you to make DEAR time a part of your daily schedule at home. For more information Click here.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills are important at Miles Elementary.

October SEL Book of the Month: "The Proudest Blue"

The Proudest Blue

The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad

The illustrations and the colors are just as powerful as words in conveying the passionate message of how to be proud of one’s culture, individuality, and religion and how to stay strong and keep one’s faith. This is an empowering book for young readers who can see themselves in Asiya or know someone like her. This book is also a great tool to learn about the beauty that comes from other’s culture, religion and life experiences.
