Message From Principal Engdall

Big picture

Greetings Shaw Community,

As you know, this week we have seen a surge in Covid cases in our community. The cases are manifesting as a widespread outbreak and not concentrated to a classroom/age group. We continue to follow the district mitigation protocol and are closely monitoring the numbers and the spread. We ask for your help in keeping children home at the first knowledge of contact or symptom to keep the rest of the community healthy and in school. I am always available should you have questions.

A big thank you for joining the queue line and creating a safe drop off for your student. This week we have seen a significant decline in the number of unaccompanied students dodging cars as they cross the parking lot.

Be safe this weekend!

All the best,

Principal Engdall

Covid cases

Students/Staff: 12

Family members: 4

FYI: Per District Policy, students/staff who test positive for Covid 19 need to stay home for 10 full days. A student/staff member who has been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid will also stay home for 10 days, however, if they remain without symptoms they can get tested for Covid at Day 5 and return after day 7 if they have a negative test. If you ever have a question about the District Policy regarding Covid 19 measures, you can review it on the Phoenix School District #1 website or call me at 602.257.3900.

Health Screening Update: For students who did not pass their Vision or Hearing Exams, all Referral Letters have been sent to your home address. Once you receive the letter and your child has been evaluated, let me know the results so I can update my records. Thanks!

Happy Halloween!

Here are some Halloween safety tips

H- Hand sanitizer and hand washing

A-Allow 6 feet between your group and others

L-Look for activities that encourage safe social distancing

L- Lower your risk by attending events at less busy times

O - Only take your mask off to eat or drink

W- Wear a protective face mask

E- Encourage neighborhood fun (scavenger hunt, decoration contest)

E- Enjoy TV specials and decorations

N- Notice and respect other people’s boundaries.

-Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.

-Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street. Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.

-Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.

-When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls

-Go out with a group of people you normally socialize with

-Kids should wait to eat their candy until they get home, have their parents inspect it and wash their hands before digging into that first piece.

Here are a few more suggestions for Halloween fun:

- You can decorate your yard and have a neighborhood decorating contest.

-You could attend a drive through Halloween activity.

-Have a family Halloween movie night (nothing too scary for the young members of the group!)

-Make special treats

-Have a Halloween scavenger hunt (walk or drive around and look for pumpkins, hay bales, scarecrows, Halloween-colored lights, inflatable Halloween decorations etc.)

-Trunk or Treat

-Host a virtual costume party with games (how many candy corns in the jar, pumpkin carving/decorating contest, best costume etc.)

Have fun and stay safe!

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

This week was our last week studying soil. We compared some of our soil samples to the soil in the garden beds. The students did an awesome job replicating the same healthy soils we have here on campus. We learned the three crucial nutrients for soil-NPK (Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium). See if your children remember them or their atomic symbols.

We received several trees from a local donor and will start planting them next week. Thanks to Stacie and Susan for acquiring these trees. We will plant in the bus bay, parking lot bay, chicken coop and the north side of campus. Look out for new foliage around the campus in November!

We also received a new aeroponics system from the Whole Kids Foundation (valued around $800.00). The 7th and 8th graders did an awesome job assembling this system and placing the various vegetables in their grow pods. The system is in the admin courtyard. Take a peek if you have a chance. Most of this plant growth will be used to spoil our rabbits on campus.

We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Another way you can help is to drop off used coffee grounds. You can ask your local Starbucks barista for their used grounds and they will happily give them to you. Used coffee grounds are high in nitrogen and will be used as an amendment to our soil. You may drop off these bags at the front office.

Hope you have a Happy Halloween and an enjoyable Día de los Muertos!
