IMPORTANT ACT NEWS FOR SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS!
STATE SPONSORED ACT IS MARCH 1ST!
The state sponsored ACT for all juniors and the PreACT for all sophomores is Tuesday, March 1st. Seniors who have never taken the ACT are eligible to test with the juniors this year. As a reminder, the ACT is a graduation requirement for all students.
Testing will begin at 7:50. Students need to arrive to school by 7:30. Testing locations will be posted throughout the building. Students are automatically signed up for the test, and there is no fee for testing. Students need to bring an ACT approved calculator, several No.2 pencils, and photo ID. Students will be dismissed from school after the testing at approximately 12:00. Buses will run and lunch will be served.
ACT electronics policy: No cell phones or other electronic devices including Apple watches are allowed in the testing room.
All juniors are enrolled in the ScoreSurge Act preparation program, and we encourage them to log in and use this program prior to the upcoming ACT.
Sophomores and juniors who do not attend on Tuesday will be counted absent and attendance rules for excused absences will apply. School attendance for Tuesday, March 1st is not optional for juniors and sophomores. Failure to attend the test without an approved excuse will be considered an unexcused absence.
Seniors are encouraged to use this day to catch up on schoolwork or participate in college visits. Seniors and freshmen DO NOT attend school on March 1st.
Reach out to Beth Estep at kestep@ortn.edu if there are any questions about ACT/PreACT testing.
FAFSA AND WEBINAR DEADLINE - 7 DAYS REMAIN TO RETAIN TNPROMISE SCHOLARSHIP
AP TEST REGISTRATION
We will be taking payments for AP exams the week of February 28 to March 4 during lunch. This is the final window to pay your exam balances as well as order exams for your Spring semester courses. As a reminder, each exam is $96. Seminar and Research exams are $126 each. If your student is taking 4 or more exams, the first three exams are full price and the fourth and subsequent exam is $40. Please make checks payable to Oak Ridge High School.
If you have decided that you want to add an exam for a course you were in during Fall semester only and you didn’t place an order in November you may still do so, however College Board will charge a $40 late fee in addition to the price of the exam. Additionally as a reminder, if a student decides they no longer wish to take an exam that they ordered in the fall College Board will charge a $40 fee to cancel their exam.
Please make sure that you have entered join codes for ALL AP courses that you are in, even if you do not plan to take the AP exam. Mr. Foust is unable to order an exam for a student, even if they have paid, if they have not entered the join code for the course.
You can find the AP exam schedule at the link below. In April, Mr. Foust will be in contact with those students who have exam conflicts and work to get any conflicts scheduled on the makeup exam dates. Like in years past, we are working with Roane State Community College to administer all of our AP exams at the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State. More information on that to come.

Into the Woods
Friday, March 4th @7pm, Saturday March 5th at 2pm & 7pm and Sunday, March 6th at 2pm.
Advanced Tickets $8 from Masquers Students or at the new Masquers office by the Auditorium after school or at the Ferrell Shop at Historic Jackson Square.
At the door - Child $9, Adult $10
Full Press Release:
Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s extracurricular drama program, will present Into the Woods, the Stephen Sondheim musical based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales, for four performances in March.
The performances are scheduled for Friday, March 4th at 7p.m., and Saturday, March 5th at 2pm and 7p.m, and Sunday, March 6th at 2p.m., at the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center (ORPAC) at Oak Ridge High School.
Into the Woods blends the story of Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, the Baker, his Wife, and the Witch into a single interwoven tale of adventure and loss. Backed by the brilliant music and lyrics of Sondheim, the songs explore choices the characters must make and how they process the experiences they are having. The first act brings every character their dreamed successes and is very family friendly. The second act explores the consequences of those successes in a more realistic and mature manner and may not be suitable for younger audience members. With moving numbers like “Moments in the Woods” and “No One is Alone” to the hilarious woe-is-me, one-up-manship of “Agony” to the sweet “It Takes Two” and many more songs, there is a musical number for every type of theater goer.
Under the direction of Dana Wham, who has directed, choreographed, or acted in numerous adult and children productions throughout the region, this year’s Into the Woods continues the ORHS Masquers tradition of bringing excellent performances, impressive sets, amazing orchestration, and technical panache to the stage.
Masquers is a student-driven extracurricular program at ORHS of 65-plus students supported by community members and teaching staff. Past performances have included Clue, Little Mermaid, Annie, Twelfth Night, Little Women, and many more. The Masquers’ yearly season showcases a fall play, a spring musical, and Atomic Acts a variety show featuring scenes, monologues, improv and musical theatre.
Advance tickets are $8 and available at the Ferrell Shop at Historic Jackson Square. At the door, student tickets are $9; adult tickets are $10.
3 Gold Award winners in the National German Exam
Congratulation!
“Students across the board performed extremely well on this year's exam.” (Michael R. Shaughnessy, Ph.D., Executive Director of AATG)
10 students from Ms Nebenfuehr’s German 3 Honors Class took the Level II National German Exam on the last day in January. All of them got a certificate of recognition. Four received the Achievement Award demonstrating that they were better than half of all National German Exam participants. James Boles received the Bronze Award for being in the 20th percentile of all participants and we have three students who received the Gold Award.
The Gold Award winners are Lillian Hartman, Jonathan Wolfe and Kevin Young.
These three students scored above the 90th percentile and they can now apply for the AATG-PAD National German Exam Scholarship. This scholarship allows the recipients to travel to Germany in the summer.
“Students receive round‐trip air transportation from Newark or New York to the course sites in Germany. In addition to a two-week school and homestay program, the trip also includes visits to other German cities, such as Berlin and Bonn.” AATG Study Trip Award - American Association of Teachers of German

Best Colleges in Tennessee according to the U.S. Department of Education
With the continuously rising cost of college education, some are questioning if it is still something worth pursuing. However, a U.S. Department of Education article revealed that a college degree is still a tremendously valuable investment. College graduates generally earn 66 percent more than those with only a high school diploma.
The first step in successfully achieving a college degree is to choose the right school that fits the students’ needs and goals. To make this process easier, we came up with a resource that will help guide those who want to pursue higher education, specifically in Tennessee. The guide provides information such as top colleges and universities, available financial support, and future employment opportunities to further assist students in making the right decision for their future.
You can view the guide here: https://www.intelligent.com/best-colleges-and-universities/tennessee/

SENIOR PARENTS - WORK ETHIC DISTINCTION CERTIFICATES
What is the certificate for?
The Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education has approved the attainment of a Work Ethic Distinction, a distinction that has been available for seniors since 2020. What it entails is students providing a certificate to potential employers that they have been demonstrating desirable work skills.
How do I earn this certificate?
Students are to attain 20 points from the list shown below the image of the certificate here. When they provide evidence of success on these measures, they will be awarded a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate that will serve as part of the student’s job application portfolio.
Logos of employers who have already indicated they are willing to grant preference in interviewing a student who presents a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate are included on the face of the certificate. The list of employers who want to join this effort is growing. An ongoing list of such partner employers will be kept at our local chambers of commerce.
Please have students download the application here and complete the applications for this distinction and return them to Dr. Holly Cross, Supervisor of Career Readiness—ORHS CS244 before April 1, 2022 for recognition at graduation.
