Helping You Stay Connected To Your Howell Family
Message For Class of 2024 Students & Parents From Activities Director Sean Erwin
Future Vikings,
I hope you and your family are having a great summer. In order to keep you better informed and also to help ensure that you are prepared and have the correct information for our fall activities and sports, I have included some important information and a video for you below. I hope you find the information beneficial and it helps prepare you for the upcoming school year. We want nothing more than for you to have success and to benefit from the successful programs we have at Howell and the information below is the first step in ensuring a great start to the fall and your involvement in activities and sports at Howell.
Currently at Howell we have nearly 75% of our students that participate in an activity, club or sport. What do we know about these students? These students that are involved and attached to Howell have higher attendance rates, higher GPA’s, lower incidents of discipline and these students also report more positive experiences and a greater sense of belonging at Howell than those not involved. As you begin a great four years at Howell, we hope that you choose to get involved and to enjoy the many benefits of being involved in our Howell family outside the normal school day.
Howell offers a wide array of activities, clubs and sports. You can find a list of all of these great opportunities here - http://www.howellvikings.com/page/3030 If you plan on being involved in a MSHSAA sponsored sport or activity this fall there are several important pieces that are necessary prior to competing. To find this information you can go to our www.howellvikings.com website and click on the tab on the right hand side that reads “MSHSAA Activities/Sports Registration” for more information regarding our fall MSHSAA sponsored activities and sports. Please be aware there are deadlines for registering and completing the online eligibility process that must be completed prior to participating in a fall activity or sport.
Additionally, you can stay informed by utilizing any of the resources I have included below. These will help you navigate any questions you may have coming into your first year at Howell. The Howell Activities Department takes pride in its many forms of communication to stay informed and its promotion and recognition of student-participants involved in our over 70 activities, clubs and sports. Staying connected to Howell activities, clubs and sports has never been easier!

Registration Deadline For Fall Activities & Sports Is August 3rd
For the 2020-21 school year the Howell MSHSAA eligibility process has moved to a completly online format. The new format is aimed at streamlining the process and making it quicker and easier for Howell student-participants involved in a MSHSAA sponsored activity to be cleared and eligible to participate. This new format will make the entire process "paperless" and will also allow families to carry over information from year to year and across all family members. The new online eligibility website can be found at www.howellvikings.com on the right side of the page by clicking the "MSHSAA Activities/Sports Registration (Eligiblity)" tab. Below you can find a step by step guide that has been established to help Viking families complete the eligibility process.
Those that are interested in participating in a fall activity or sport must have their online eligibility registration complete by August 3rd. Online registration must be complete and final clearance given in order to tryout for a fall activity or sport. Those that have questions or issues can now also view a tutorial video that has been developed that will walk you through the entire process. You can view the video below.
Required Fall Eligibility Meeting (Formerly Meet The Coaches) Is Now Online
Additional Impact Testing Dates Added
Several precautions will be taken to ensure student safety during the Impact Testing. Students will be assigned to socially distanced seating in the Learning Commons during testing and all equipment used by students will be sanitized prior to and following testing. A limited number of students will be allowed into the computer labs in the Learning Commons during these times. Masks are encouraged but not required. Students are asked to report directly to the Learning Common 5 minutes prior to the testing time. We ask that parents do not accompany their student into the building to cut down on the number of people present on campus and in the building. Thank you in advance to everyone for their efforts in helping to make our return to activities successful.
Phase 3 Return To Play For Activities & Sports
Howell activities and sports began the gradual process of returning to participation on July 1st. The district released the "Phase 2 Guidelines" and programs at Howell have been following them since returning to campus on July 1st. During this process, student-participant and staff safety has been of utmost importance in the return. The return to activities guidelines have been been followed by Howell programs and these guidelines were developed in part from the recommendations of medical professionals and the St. Charles County Health Department.
Below you will find links to several important pieces for our return to activities at Howell as well as the new Phase 3 Guidelines that began on July 16th. By clicking the links below you can view the entire return to activities guidelines that all programs will be following during “Phase 3.” You can also click the link below to watch a video detailing the return to play guidelines that have been in place during Phase 2 by Activities Director Sean Erwin. Both links are valuable resources that we encourage all students and parents to read and view prior to attending any activities.

As part of the return to activities Phase 3 guidelines students and parents will be asked to complete a signed waiver to participate in their camp or activities. The student should bring the signed waiver to the first session they will be participating in. In addition to the signed waiver students will be asked each day to bring a completed student check in form. In order to participate in any activities or camps a student must turn in this student check in form with all questions answered daily when attending activities or camps. This form will be used in all activities and sports as the attendance check in and verification of the students that have attended each day. Students that do not have the check in form completed daily will not be allowed to participate in any activities and will be asked to leave. You can print off a student check in page by clicking the link below. Coaches will have limited copies of the form for students that may forget their student check in. It is the students responsibility to come prepared with their student check in sheet completed each day they are in attendance and to turn it into their coach/sponsor as part of the attendance process.

Students, Parents, Staff & Fans Encouraged To "Be A Viking" During 20-21 School Year
During the 20-21 school year the Howell Activities Department will be asking student-participants, staff, parents and fans to "Be A Viking" as they participate and support the many activities, clubs and sports at Howell. Nearly 75% of students at Howell participate in an activity, club or sport and the benefits of that involvement are endless. The focus of "Be A Viking" during the upcoming school year will further promote and enhance the experience for those within the "Howell Family" and will continue to help our programs represent our school and community in a positive way.
The Howell Activities Department has long held the belief that all Howell programs should promote high achievement in all activities/sports, in the classroom, and in our community. Preparing our student-participants is our top priority and being involved in a Howell activity enhances the overall high school experience of students, staff, and parents alike. Howell programs recognize the role they play in developing successful students who represent our programs, Francis Howell High School, the community, and their families in a positive way.
The Francis Howell Activities Department and its programs have had a set of core values that have guided its programs the last six years. The core values of respect, integrity, sportsmanship, and excellence, better known as R.I.S.E., are vital in the development of the young men and women in all Howell programs. The R.I.S.E. core values are the foundation of the programs at Howell and also provide a foundation for future success for student-participants long after they leave Howell.
The R.I.S.E. core values are communicated in Howell programs in the following way:
Respect - Student-participants, staff, parents and Viking fans respect and value others.
Integrity - Student-participants, staff, parents, and Viking fans demonstrate their integrity by being honest and trustworthy in their actions. The preparation of our students to become leaders, good citizens and contributors to the community is a commitment by all involved in Howell activities.
Sportsmanship - Student-participants, staff, parents and Viking fans practice the ideals of sportsmanship and are leaders within the framework of a competitive environment.
Excellence - Student-participants, staff, parents and Viking fans are in pursuit of excellence in sport, activity, in the classroom and in our community. Our focus on excellence remains constant as we strive to create positive and successful experiences for all involved.
During the 20-21 school year we hope that all Howell Family members will "Be A Viking" and help represent our programs and continue the long standing tradition of success and pride of being a Howell Viking.
