Upcoming Tests

Friday: Social Studies

In the classroom...

Last week we began our new read aloud, The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan. This is a book about a 12 year old boy who finds himself in the middle of an argument between the Greek gods. Can he find Zeus's master bolt before the argument turns into a war? If you like Greek mythology this series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, is a great series with lots of excitement and action.

We are also studying Main Idea and Supporting Details. When you get a chance, ask your child about the main idea of their AR book is.

Language Arts

In English we are beginning our unit on prepositions. This is always a difficult skill for 5th graders. They may need some extra help from you to understand this concept.

In Writing we are just finishing up an informative piece. For the next few weeks, we are going to be looking at writing prompts I-STEP style. We will be going over what a student paper with a score of 6 looks like and so forth. Then we will do a few practice prompts before I-STEP hits us in February.

In Spelling, you will notice some changes have been made. Instead of memorizing 20 words and regurgitating them, we have moved to a spelling/vocabulary list. This will continue for the rest of the year. Their tests will look different. Not only are they expected to know how to spell the word, they will be required to know its meaning and be able to use it in a sentence correctly. Also, the list has been cut to 10 words because they are more challenging. If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact me.

This week we will begin a study on the relationships between percents, decimal, and fractions. Students can practice these topics on You do not need a membership for this. It will let you practice 20 questions a night without a membership.

Social Studies

This week we continue our study of explorers. We will be focusing on French & English explorers and "sail" into our 13 colonies unit next. :)

A project will be assigned to your child either at the end of the week or the following Monday. Be watching for rubrics and paperwork for that project.

Science & Health

In Science, we have begun our unit on the Solar System. We will be looking at all 8 planets, as well as the moon, and other objects. Your child has been assigned a project for this unit. You can find the details and a rubric in Canvas. Ask your child how to get to it. These are due the week before the end of the grading period.

Student Council

Student Council would love to become more involved in our community. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how we could help, please let us know. Winter is a slow time for us.

The robotics team competed in a SCSD2 scrimmage this past week. I think we made a good showing! I am so proud of these kids who work hard to represent our school. Our next competition is on Saturday, January 21st. This is the state qualifier competition. Come support our team as we compete to make it to state.

Drama Club

Rehearsals are going great! Please start looking and bringing in your costumes. Crayons, you need pants (sweat pants or leggings) and a t-shirt the color of your character. Make sure you have your parts memorized by next week's rehearsal.

Chess Club

Chess Club seems to be a revolving door! :) If your child didn't get drawn from the lottery to be in chess club, be patient. Eventually they will make it in. :)

Math Bowl

Math Bowl designed our t-shirts last week. They are at the printer's being prepared for us. We have an invitational meet at Lanesville Elementary on January 25th. So excited to see what these kids can do!

Parents, if you have not signed up for Pinwheel, I encourage you to do so. This website will help you keep informed of activities, tests, projects, etc... that your child is involved in or has coming up. You can create an account and sign up for the groups that your kids are in. If your child does not participate in any extracurricular activities, it can still be beneficial to you. The school calendar is attached to Pinwheel. I will also be adding tests, projects, and other 5th grade dates on Pinwheel. It's really simple to do!

"In an effort to improve communication between Johnson Elementary and our school community, we are now using Pinwheel. We are sure you will appreciate the convenience of a single source for all the information you want to know in a simple, intuitive system. You will be able to stay on top of everything that your kids are up to, and can receive homework and test reminders …as well as club meetings, practices, and game updates. Information came home with your students to help you to create a Pinwheel account." --Mr. Routt
