Please keep the people of Ukraine in your thoughts and prayers. May this war come to a resolution as soon as possible. We plan on doing a fund raiser(s) to send our support. I offer this prayer for Ukraine I found at CAFOD.
Loving God,
We pray for the people of Ukraine,
for all those suffering or afraid,
that you will be close to them and protect them.
We pray for world leaders,
for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.
We pray for the world
that in this moment of crisis,
we may reach out in solidarity
to our brothers and sisters in need.
May we walk in your ways
so that peace and justice
become a reality for the people of Ukraine
and for all the world.
Amen.
Yours in Christ,
Glenn Plummer

English
English 7: We are wrapping up The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We will have a Socratic Seminar about the novel as a whole, and then we will begin our final project by creating Character Autobiography Posters. We will be starting The Five People you Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom when we return from Spring Break. With this novel we will explore the way Heaven is presented, as well as the importance of connectedness we have as humans on Earth.
ELA 8 In ELA 8, we have been studying the concept of extended metaphor in poetry. We have read poems by Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and Walt Whitman. The students have been annotating the poetry as they read and using these notes to create an argumentative paragraph about the meaning of the extended metaphor. In LA 8, students have been working on creating outlines, both traditional and nontraditional, of chapters in Before Columbus. We are also learning how to write introductions and thesis statements for expository writing.
English 9: We are continuing our reading of excerpts from The Odyssey by Homer. We have been reviewing the traits of an epic hero and how they apply to Odysseus on his many adventures. We will continue to work on writing a detailed summary and supporting our arguments with evidence from our reading. Upon completion of The Odyssey, we will write a formal paper. Additionally, we are continuing our vocabulary and grammar practice.
English 10: We are wrapping up our exploration of Sandra Cisneros’ collection of vignettes, The House on Mango Street. Our final project will be a collection of vignettes written by the students. We will also have a final discussion about the book in a Socratic Seminar. We will then be jumping into Of Mice and Men around Spring Break.
English 11: We are finishing up our Realism and Naturalism unit that included works from Ambrose Bierce, Stephen Crane, Jack London, and Kate Chopin. Following Spring Break, we will begin our unit on the Moderns, which will include The Great Gatsby. Additionally, we are continuing our vocabulary, grammar, and ACT practice.
AP English & Composition: We are starting our “Voice Lesson” presentations on March 1st, which will continue through April. Each student will present these rhetorical analysis slides with a partner and individually. We are marching to the May AP test and diligently practicing answering multiple-choice passages, as well as writing essays. We also did a bit of cramming for the ACT test in the middle of February and will continue to revisit some grammar skills to keep us sharp for the AP test and ACT.
LA 7 - Coming from Verbs, we are now start our Non-Fiction unit, taking a look at the difference between facts and opinions, and reading Exploring the Titanic by Robert D. Ballard.
HS Creative Writing - We are working with dialogue and how it is used to express characters traits, motivations, and meaning. We will be looking at an example of vague dialogue in the short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway.
JH Speech- We are currently finishing How-To speeches, and then moving on to some basics of Speech giving.
English 12: Currently we are working with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Soon we will engage Hamlet. “If it be now, t’is not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come. The readinsss is all!”--Bill S.
AP Lit: We are going to finish Native Son, write more essays, practice AP exams, and after that, we will descend into Dante’s Inferno for the bulk of Lent. We will keep writing essays and have a helluvatime (see what I did there?)
Foreign Language
Spanish 1
Students know basic vocabulary to go shopping for clothes: they can identify various items of clothing, colors, to ask 'how much' they cost, etc. and can tell what clothes they want to buy. They can also go to a restaurant, read a Menu and order food. they can tell "I am hungry, I am thirsty" Etc. They can use verbs in the present tense.
Spanish 2
Students know clothing vocabulary to go shopping. They can tell what they like, how it fits, they can express opinion politely on a variety of topica; they can ask for the price of clothing and accessory items, and can tell what clothes they want to buy. They can also go to a restaurant, read a Menu and order various food items. They can use verbs in both the Preterite and Imperfect Tenses to relate past events. Etc.
Spanish 3
We are finishing Unit 2.2 and should be starting Unit 3 in a couple of weeks or so. Students learned the direct object pronouns, the imperative forms for all personal pronouns including regular and irregular verbs. We are also reviewing all verb tenses learned. We are presently working with Vocabulary used in Communication/Media.
Next in our agenda is to learn/review the uses of Por and Para, demonstrative adjectives, and possessives as well as the future tense and the indirect object pronouns (review). Around the second week in March students will start working on their next oral presentation.
Spanish 4
We just finished learning the uses and verb endings for the present subjunctive. I was very impressed as to how well they learned regular, irregular, and stem-changing verbs for this mood. We will continue to work on the subjunctive mood and all verb tenses that go with it until the end of the school year. We continue to review Por and Para, demonstrative adjectives, and possessives. We are starting Unit 6 and learning about the different rooms in a house, household items and their uses as well as places in the neighborhood. Students will be working on an oral presentation at the beginning or middle of March with this particular vocabulary. We will end Unit 6 with a chapter test.
Math
Pre Algebra - In Pre Algebra, the students completed the unit on graphing y=mx+b with a stained glass project. Some pictures are included. We have now moved onto the unit of Scientific Notation and Exponents. The students will learn where scientific notation is used, for example distances in space. They also will learn multiplication and division rules of exponents. In April, the students will be taking the ISASP, therefore we also have begun Basic Skills Bellwork to brush up on computation skills to better prepare for the assessment.
Algebra 2 - We are well into Chapter 5 - Solving Polynomials. We're focusing on using the graphing calculator, as well as solving polynomial equations by hand. We'll have a 5.1-5.3 quiz before we leave for Spring Break.
Statistics - We just finished up an introduction to Hypothesis Testing and Confidence Intervals in Chapter 5 and are now getting ready to apply those concepts to a Difference of two proportions in Chapter 6 before moving on to the Chi-Square Distribution (that some students were introduced to in AP Bio).
AP Calculus AB - We are finishing up Unit 6 (and will test before students leave for Spring Break), which is Applications of Integration. We'll be starting in on Unit 7, Differential Equations, later this week.
AP Calculus BC - We will finish Infinite Sequences and Series right after Spring Break. That just leaves our last unit of Taylor Series before starting our formal test preparation for the AP Exam on May 9th.
Religion
Via: In Mrs. Welter’s Via, the students have been continuing church history. We have learned about St. Paul's missions, the legalization of Christianity with the Edict of Milan, and have gotten to the fall of Rome. The students have completed projects about this time period in our Church History. Some examples are included. Our next unit will include Feudalism and the Medieval Church. During this unit, we will learn about separation of Church and State both in church history and today, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, and the Crusades.
Theology 11: In Theology 11, the focus for the second semester is Vocations. Along with Vocations of Marriage and Holy Orders, we also do some career preparation. These last few weeks the students have focused on creating their resume and learning about the interview process. The students also did a mock interview with community members. This is such a great experience for our students. Thank you to the Kirkwood Workplace Learning Connection for coming in and helping with this unit.
Science
7th grade science - Mrs. Coffin
The 7th grade class is busy and involved with our Cells and the Human Body unit. We have reviewed cells and are now focused on learning about genetics! After genetics we will continue our journey through the human body systems.
8th Grade Science - Mrs. Goldsmith
Science 8 had just finished up their chemistry unit! We might sneak a little more chemistry in when we talk about Earth, space, and weather, but now we are taking a quick detour into the human body. The Endocrine and Reproductive systems, as well as Pregnancy, Growth, and Development were not covered last year due to lack of time during the human body unit, so we are going over those topics this year! Hopefully we will have the unit covered before spring break, so you have plenty of things to discuss on your family road trip. :) The unit after break will be out of this world… SPACE!
Earth & Space Science - Mrs. Coffin
Currently the students are learning about (or remembering) about plate tectonics. They are applying their knowledge to how the plates are currently moving and the consequences of that movement. We are going to get out our engineering hats and attempt to design houses that can withstand a 6.0 earthquake without collapsing. As many homes that are in earthquake-prone regions of the US are also in wildfire areas, we will also research and design our homes to withstand fire. The students will then do a cost/benefit analysis of their engineering designs.
Biology - Mr. LaKose
Biology students have finished up their investigations on taxonomy, viruses, and prokaryotes. We are transitioning into our investigations of eukaryotes, starting with the Kingdom Protista. We’ll be looking at live specimen examples such as Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena, Volvox, and Stentor!
Chemistry - Mrs. Goldsmith
Chem kids have just finished up their unit on chemical reactions. They have done a great job working through how to determine products of chemical reactions, states of substances, and figuring out unknown solutions in the lab. Coming up next is stoichiometry, where we mix Chapter 6 and Chapter 7&8 together into one big batch of chemistry and math fun! What students definitely look forward to are the two labs in this unit--making S’Mores to figure out limiting reactants and our Quantitative Analysis Lab where we turn inedible chemicals into table salt and finally get to use fire. This is a great unit where what we’ve learned this year really all comes together!
Anatomy & Physiology - Mr. LaKose
Students are investigating the nervous system, including the major divisions of as well as the physiology, such as how nerve impulses are conducted. Students will perform labs on reflex physiology as well as each of the special senses (olfaction, gustation, vision, hearing & balance/equilibrium).
AP Biology - Mr. LaKose
Unit 6 is approaching, moving into Mendelian inheritance. We’ll dig deeper into dominant vs. simple inheritance patterns, special forms of inheritance, polygenetics, etc. This ties in nicely with our previous conversation of molecular genetics, such as gene expression and biotechnology!
Principles of Biomedical Science - Mr. LaKose
Students are continuing to play various roles, currently as a cytogeneticist. We are researching neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), including its effects, treatment, and overall outlook for our patient. We are also brushing up on our knowledge of the cell cycle, mitosis & meiosis, protein synthesis, and much more along the way!
Physics - Mrs. Goldsmith
Physics students have finished their large catapult lab where they were graded based on the accuracy of their launch after being given a random height and distance to launch from. It was great for students to see how the equations they’ve been using in class really can be applied to real life situations. Students have just taken the Chapter 6 test (Motion in Two Dimensions) and will be starting a quick unit on Gravitation (including Kepler’s and Newton’s Laws, as well as some fun theories by a cool guy named Einstein). From there we will move on to momentum.
Social Studies
We finished Biography IV. Students took notes on note cards on a subject of their choosing, then passed their note cards to a partner who then wrote a paper to the best of their abilities. The 3rd part was to pass to another partner who asked questions about the subject and tried to find the answer in the paper. We were looking for what were reliable sources and to leave a trail of information for others. The kids did a fantastic job on this project. We are starting the Age of Jackson and finishing up with a history themed Monopoly board before Spring Break.
