Words From The Counselor

"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart." - Anne Frank

During the week of January 22 - January 26, Oxford Prep participated in the Great Kindness Challenge. Throughout the week, students engaged in activities aiming to help spread kindness in our school community. 7th grader Matthew Fulcher was the winner, completing all 50 items on the Great Kindness Challenge Checklist. Congrats Matthew!

This week is National School Counseling Week. National School Counseling week is a week set aside to raise awareness about Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. The goal of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program at Oxford Prep is to address the needs of all students by helping them to acquire competencies in personal, academic and career development domains. Students need skills in these domains to succeed in school and in life. While parents often do a great job in teaching many of these skills, it is nice to have reinforcement at school as well. Oxford Prep's Comprehensive School Counseling Program is made up of classroom guidance, small group activities, individual counseling and college and career planning. Students are referred by teachers or parents for individual and group counseling. If you want to learn more about Oxford Prep's Comprehensive School Counseling Program please contact me.

Program Spotlight: July Experience at Davidson College

July Experience is a powerful three-week academic immersion experience for rising high school juniors and seniors on the campus of Davidson College. Students live in dorms with a diverse cohort of participants and Davidson student mentors, take two courses from Davidson faculty, and have the opportunity to participate in workshops with admission staff. Opportunities are available to explore the town, spend time at our lake campus, and visit Charlotte throughout the program. Find out more about the program and apply by March 28th for the summer 2018 session.

Small Group Counseling Available

The purpose of small groups is to bring students with similar needs or concerns together to share, problem solve, and connect with their peers to enhance their social and emotional development. This is NOT a form of therapy, but rather an outlet where students can express themselves in a safe space.

Students may participate in the following groups:

Anxiety & Coping Skills

Motivation & Effort

Conflict Resolution

Academic Improvement

Girls Group (self-esteem, female empowerment, positive relationships)

Boys Group (positive relationships, behavior management)

Please contact Mrs. Stadler for more information.
