Mrs. Foley's Counselor Corner

March, 2022

Dear Suamico Elementary Parents/Guardians,

During the month of February and March we have been busy learning while we wish the cold winter weather away and look forward to spring warmth!

In the month of January we did a Food Drive for the HSSD Giving Tree Pantry. Your generous donations added up to 2,043 lbs of food items collected!!! The 3rd and 4th grade Student Council representatives were able to take a field trip to the Giving Tree to learn how their hard work would help our community. The image to the right was taken before boarding the buses to return to school. Those kids did fantastic and represented Suamico Elementary very well!!

As I reminder, please check out our HSSD Community Events on Mental Health, we'd love to see you in person or virtually! While I understand the topics may not apply to our elementary level students, it is good to know information that can be shared with family/friends. Check it out!

(Please feel free to check back for updates as I'll be updating this newsletter for the whole month of March.)

Life Skills Lessons

In the month of February and March we focus on:

  • All grades - Anti-bullying and Conflict Resolution skills.
  • Kindergarteners focus on Peace and what makes them feel lucky (St. Patrick's Day).
  • Words of Encouragement cards made by 1st and 2nd graders to support the 3rd and 4th graders who will begin WI State Forward Exams at the end of March.

Second Step Curriculum

I get to visit every class, K-4 to teach Life Skills class throughout the school year on an "A week", "B week" rotation. Thus, your child(ren) will have Life Skills class twice/month. This year I am very excited to have an evidence and research-based curriculum called "Second Step" that I will be using to guide our conversations. The 4 units cover the topics of Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problems Solving. See below for more grade level information on Scope/Sequence of this Social/Emotional curriculum.

Parent/Family Resources

Sibling conflict lately? If so, here are some open ended questions to help restore their relationship once they are in a calm state (See image to the right)

Also, see image below for a Problem-Solving Wheel you can post for your children to select an option if in conflict with a sibling/peer.

Video Read Aloud's with Mrs. Foley

The Howard-Suamico School District has chosen to implement a Social/Emotional Curriculum in all grades K-8 called the Leader In Me. During the 2020-21 school year I recorded read alouds from the book, "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" for our students and families to learn about the 7 Habits while we were virtual. I'll keep these video read alouds here for future reference. Enjoy ;)

Habit 1 - Be Proactive

Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind

Habit 3 - Put First Things First

Habit 4 - Think Win-Win

Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand Then to Be Understood

Habit 6 - Synergize

Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw
