Volunteer of the Week ~Sara Nassef~
Miss Sara started volunteering in my class when her oldest son was in first grade. Their family was new to Sierra Verde and to our country. She has always been so kind and helpful. She takes on any task. She will staple, sort, build, clean, copy, work with students, and so much more. When she is done with what I have given her to do, she always asks if I have more. Even though her children are not in my classroom anymore, she continues to help in my classroom. When we were learning online and volunteers were not able to help in classrooms, she volunteered to do tasks that were helpful electronically. She typed up our first grade sight word books lists 1-10 when we started our new reading program with slightly new high frequency words. She even created it to be easier to copy than our last sight word booklet. She constantly looks for ways to make teachers lives easier. She is amazing! She has even brought back gifts from Egypt. She knows that we teach about ancient Egypt and wanted to share items with me so I could also share with my students. We are blessed to have her as a volunteer and as a friend.

A Message from Mrs. O
A big thank you to all students and parents and staff that supported our book fair. This fund raiser will help us buy books for the library. The first books we buy for the library are books recommended by students. Our SV students have already checked out close to 5,000 books this school year. I was so glad to have the help of volunteers during the book fair this year, everything ran smoothly with their help. We always have room for more book fair volunteers.
Priority Open Enrollment 23-24
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. If you currently have an 8th grader that will be attending Mountain Ridge High School next year and Mountain Ridge is not your home school, you need to apply for open enrollment by December 05, 2022 for priority consideration. If you have another student starting school next year in any grade and your current student is on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Sierra Verde, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend SV next year, it is essential that you get an application ASAP and prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist most students if they apply after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online, no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4800.

Mindfulness Monday Challenge of the Week
Cleaning is not usually one of those activtiies that people describe as enjoyable. It is usually only enjoyed after it is done. Because of this, cleaning tends to be something we rush through. So this week, let's introduce a new perspective on cleaning: mindful cleaning. What if you were to look at the task as a way to practice mindfulness? Instead of racing through the chores, give yourself time, turn off your phone and other distractions, and focus on cleaning - and nothing else. When you practice mindfulness while cleaning, you not only end up doing a better job, but you learn how to find meaning in the chores you do. You have to clean up anyway, so instead of rushing through, use it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness.
This weeks challenge: As you clean this week, pause with each object in your hand, think about whether it belongs, and make an intentional choice about where it is going to go. Think about how cleaning will help you feel better about yourself, your family, your home, your desk, or whatever space you are in.
