Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter
April 14, 2016
What is going on?
Math: This week will be dedicated to spiraling concepts previously taught this school year, while also creating and using a budget and the importance of a trusted lender.
Reading: We will begin our unit, “Read Like a Third Grader”. In this unit, we teach strategies strong readers use to comprehend and answer questions about a selection of text. These strategies include: numbering paragraphs, rereading the questions two times, and going back to the text to find evidence for an answer choice. These strategies will be used on the 2nd Grade Language Arts Benchmark in May.
Writing: We will focus on the titles of our stories this week in writing. We will use mentor texts to help us identify what a good focused title looks like. Then we will begin applying what we learn to our personal stories. We will working on small moment writing as well.
Social Studies: Students will examine the development of a product from a natural resource to a finished product. We will also look at the ways science and technology have changed the ways we meet basic needs (then and now).
The regular homework is on hold next week. You do not have to turn in regular homework on Friday the 22nd. But, I will be sending you on a family field trip to HEB. This homework needs to be done by April 19th (Tuesday)
My class is responsible for providing cheese crackers and cereal for the Baptist Children's home Project.
Your child will be responsible for finding prices for these goods. Comparing brands and such. We will then be working on a budget for our big field trip on the 26th to go and physically buy the goods. Thank you: Mrs. Hawkins, Mrs. Vanhorn, Ms. O'Connor, Mrs. Ostlund, and Mrs. McElfish for coming on our trip on the 26th! I am so thankful for your help! I will send you more information next week.
PBL: In the fall, our first PBL unit was on Round Rock landmarks. One of our landmarks of study was the Texas Baptist Children’s Home. For our last PBL unit this year, our focus will be on how we can help Round Rock children in need. One of TBCH’s biggest needs is food for the summer. They receive a lot of donations around the holidays, but their supplies decrease as summertime rolls around. Our students will work on budgets, fundraising, and learning the importance of “giving without receiving”, as they raise money to purchase food for the Texas Baptist Children’s Home.
Sight Words: There will be no spelling/sight words this week due to the intensity and workload of the PBL.
