Dear Parents/Guardians:

This school year, one of our MPPS therapy dogs will be working in Fancher Elementary. He is an Labrador Retriever named Blu! Thanks to a generous grant from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, Blu has been working hard to complete an extensive training program. This will be Blu’s third year working at Mt. Pleasant Public Schools.

Research has shown that therapy dogs support psychological and academic growth while increasing social skills, self-esteem and school attendance in children. Additionally, having a therapy dog at our school aligns with Mt. Pleasant Public School’s social and emotional learning goals. Therapy dogs are trained to provide emotional support, which positively impacts reading skills, emotional functioning and communication skills. In addition, the use of therapy dogs may decrease anxiety, improve motivation and increase emotion regulation in students.

Staff members within the building will be able to invite Blu into their classrooms, he will be available for one-on-one time with students, and he may attend special Fancher and Mt. Pleasant Public Schools events. Student interaction with Blu will be completely voluntary and will be based on student comfort level. Blu lives with Mrs. Shiner and will spend a lot of time in her room. A safety plan has been developed and put in place for students with allergies and/or students who have an aversion to dogs. Please contact your building principal to report any allergies, aversions, or other concerns you may have regarding your child’s potential interaction with Blu; we will work closely with you to ensure your child’s safety needs are met.

This is an exciting time at Mt. Pleasant Public Schools; Blu and his host family are looking forward to the start of the school year and working with all of the students, staff, and community members. For more information and photos of Blu and the other district dogs, visit “Oiler Pack” on Facebook.com

School Supplies & Back to School Tips for Families

There are NO required school supplies for your student. All supplies have been made available through our Project Aware funding. If your student is in need of a backpack or lunch box, those can be provided by the school as well. Teachers always welcome disinfectant supes and Kleenex throughout the school year.

Back to School Tips

1. Label Everything: use a sharpie and put your student's name on everything - lunchbox, coat, water bottle, and clothes.

2. Extra Clothes: send an extra pair of clothes to stay in your student's locker in a plastic bag is helpful.

3. Water Bottle: send your child to school with a water bottle to refill at our filling stations.

4. Transportation Plan: having a regular plan.

5. School Agenda: use this to write in any transportation changes.

You could start a new journal this year to pass back and forth and write these questions in them. Or you could talk about these around the dinner table, as well. Let's continue to encourage both thoughtfulness and intentionality in the kids we love! Let's do all we can to help them see that they can be resourceful --with who they are, how they connect and yes, even how they study this year! (@sissygoff)
