The Summit SPARK
OCTOBER 2021
October 2021
Dear Summit Families,
This month is:
GLOBAL DIVERSITY AWARENESS MONTH
NATIONAL BULLY PREVENTION MONTH
Check out the links above for more information
This month is Global Diversity Awareness Month. We celebrate Global Diversity every October as a reminder of the positive impact a diverse culture of people can have on society as a whole. With that in mind, please take a moment to view the short video clip about Hispanic Heritage Month above. This month is also Bully Prevention month. You can also learn more below.
It's hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year is almost over. We will have Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences again this year. Links to sign up will be coming soon. Please look for this in the next couple of weeks. Once the link has been created, it will be added to this newsletter as well.
Students have been working hard on the Culture PBLs and answering the question "How can we make Summit a reflection of who we are in a way that honors our unique identities?" and have come up with some exciting ideas. There are ideas for class books, school murals, poems, and various other ways to show and honor our unique identities. Students are excited to share their ideas and collaborate with their peers to improve on those ideas.
As we work on our Portrait of a Graduate competencies, our big focus over the next several weeks will be around becoming "Socially Aware & Global Citizens". Like last year, students will earn brag tags when they are able to demonstrate these competencies consistently at a level of mastery. We at Summit have and teach our students to have a Growth Mindset. We understand that everyone learns at different rates and realize that not all students are at a level of mastery at the same time. So not to worry! Students have all year to earn their brag tags. While we may be focused on "Socially Aware & Global Citizen" right now, students who have not yet mastered the competency before we move to our next big focus, still have an opportunity to practice, reach their goals, and earn a brag tag. Remember, teaching and learning of our Portrait of a Graduate Competencies happen all year long!

Counselor's Corner
Hello Summit Families!
My name is Jordan Dawson and I am the school counselor here at Summit. This school year, I will be going into each classroom twice a month to teach social emotional learning (SEL) lessons. These lessons will cover topics such as understanding feelings and emotions, coping strategies, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, friendship, kindness, empathy and more.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month! We will be discussing the topic of bullying with students and doing activities to promote bullying prevention in our school. Wednesday, October 20th is Unity Day. We are asking the entire school to wear orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion, and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.
Your child can participate by one of the following options:
• Wearing anything orange on Unity Day (shirt, pants, dress, shoes, mask, painting their nails, etc.)
• Creating their own orange t-shirt or mask with a message of kindness on it to wear to school
Additionally, Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center designs their own Unity Day t-shirts each year and sells them online for $12. If you would prefer to purchase a t-shirt for your child from Pacer, they can be ordered HERE (your order must be placed by Monday, October 11th at 11:59 pm CST to receive the t-shirt by Unity Day).
On Unity Day, every class will be participating in a schoolwide activity that will be hung up as a reminder to everyone that our school is united against bullying. We want all students to feel safe, welcome, and included at Summit Road STEM Elementary!
More information about bullying prevention can be found at pacerkidsagainstbullying.org.
If you have any questions or concerns about Unity Day, the SEL lessons, or if you would like to set up a time to speak with me for another reason, please email me at Jordan.dawson@reyn.org
