DAVIES HIGH SCHOOL
EAGLES REPORT - FEBRUARY 2023
Honor – Integrity – Pursuit of Excellence
GREETINGS, EAGLES!
Dear Davies Parents/Guardians,
It is hard to believe we are over the half way mark on the 2022-23 school year. The days sure are flying by quickly and as we push through the latter half of winter we are beginning our planning for the 2023-24 school year. Currently all 9-11 grade students are having conversations with counselors and teachers regarding registration for classes next year. Registration for classes is one of the most important things a high school student does. The decisions on classes selected today plays a large role in their future and future planning for teachers and administration at Davies. If you haven’t already, I strongly encourage all parents and guardians to sit down with your child and talk with them about their choices to ensure they are making the best decisions for their future. Often students have little idea about plans after high school, but it is never too early to start having those conversations.
Spring Parent Teacher Conferences will again be held only one evening this year. Please note that conferences will be held the evening of February 22 from 4:15-8:15. All conferences this spring will be held via Zoom. A Zoom link and sign-up process will be sent out to all parents wanting to reach out to their child’s teachers. I strongly encourage parents to take advantage of this opportunity and hope the Zoom conferences allow everyone who wants to connect with a teacher the ability to do so.
The month of February brings us to the end of the winter activities season and the start of the playoffs for many of our Eagle teams. This includes numerous musical performances and competitions. I want to wish them all good luck as they wrap up their seasons and I want to invite all our Eagle fans to come out and support those students taking part.
Thank you,
Sean Safranski
Davies High School Assistant Principal

NURSES CORNER: FROSTBITE
Frostbite can result in the same type of tissue damage as a burn. It can be a serious condition and may require medical attention. Exposure to extreme cold environments, even for a short period of time, can result in hypothermia and frostbite; particularly on fingers, toes, nose and ears.
Frostbitten skin may look discolored, feel cold to the touch and feel numb to the person. Symptoms with deeply frostbitten skin may include skin that looks white or waxy and skin that feels firm or hard.
Treatment of frostbite includes: taking the person to a warm place; removing cold or wet clothing and replacing with warm and dry clothes; protecting the cold skin from further injury. DO NOT rub or massage the cold part or apply heat such as a water bottle, heating pad or hot running water. Cover the skin loosely with a nonstick, sterile dressing or dry blanket. If the skin that looks discolored-grayish, white or waxy, feels firm or hard and has a loss of sensation, further evaluation should be done by a health care provider and possibly may need to call 911.

Philanthropy and Youth
What has Davies PaY (Philanthropy and Youth) Group Been Up To?
This year, our theme for PaY is “Sustainability.” As a group, we have divided into four committees and begun our work researching and conducting site visits with a number of nonprofits around the Fargo/Moorhead area. In the next month, students will work to finish their site visits and narrow down our groups choices for distributing funds. Each year, we are allotted up to $5,000 from a private family foundation. Those nonprofits that align most directly with the “theme”, which match our mission/vision most closely with their own vision, and which can do the most good for their clients can earn up to $1,000. Once we finalize those choices, they are approved and assistance for the nonprofits can begin.
In addition, students will also begin their “Inspire, Lead, Share” projects. Usually, those tie directly to the nonprofit organizations and can benefit those groups in ways other than financial contributions. Students try to give back of their own time, talents, and even resources to promote change and to benefit the community.
Thanks,
Madeline Nordmeyer and Heather Yarber

LOCKERS
Lockers are equipped with a combination padlock loaned by the school. Lockers should be kept locked and combinations not shared with other students. Lost or stolen locks will be paid for by the student. The charge for a lost lock is $5.00. Students are responsible for books and personal possessions at all times. STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO LEAVE VALUABLES AT HOME. Any graffiti appearing on the outside or inside of the locker is considered vandalism and will be the responsibility of the student. School administrators reserve the right to search lockers, but only when it is reasonable to suspect that the locker contains items or articles which may constitute a hazard or contains property that does not belong to the student.
Gym lockers and locks are available to students enrolled in physical education classes. All items placed in the locker room during class must be placed in a locked locker to ensure items are not stolen. Students must refrain from placing personal items of value in gym lockers. The school will NOT be responsible for the loss of unsecured items. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all personal items are properly secured when left in the locker room areas. Lost locks are again the responsibility of the student and a $5 fee will be assessed for a lost lock.

Yearbook Senior Portrait Requirements
Every graduating senior is allowed to submit a portrait photo to be used as their picture in the Davies Yearbook. This photo must follow the guidelines and rules from school policy, dress code, and law. Not following these guidelines will result in the photo not being allowed in the yearbook and the student will be asked to submit a different photo.
- Subjects including promoting the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, guns, weapons, or depiction of violence may not be worn or shown in the photo.
- Photos with accessories (i.e. hats, scarves, jewelry), props (i.e. sports equipment, musical instruments, cars), and domesticated pets are allowed as long as they do not promote or condone illegal activity.
- The subject of the photo should be the student, not the props or background. (Yearbook staff prefers head and shoulder photos.)
- Violating school dress code, policies, and/or behavior codes
- Displays of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, or weapons of any kind
- Inappropriate gestures, facial expressions, postures, or hand gestures
All photos submitted must conform to school standards and policies and if needed, may be subject to review or approval by, but not limited to the yearbook staff, the yearbook advisor, and the school administration.
The yearbook staff reserves the right to edit or deny any submitted photo for publication and printing in the book.
The yearbook is a school publication, supervised by a student media advisor, and shall be reviewed by an administrator if the publication goes against school policy. (NDCC Ch. 15.1-19-25)
Digital Photo Requirements: All photos must be at 300 dpi in resolution and at least 1.5 by 2 inches in size. Davies Yearbook Staff can crop original pictures if needed. Screenshots of pictures should not be submitted. Pictures need to be saved as a JPG file. Picture files must be named with the senior’s last name and then the first name (ex: Smith_William.jpg).
SENIOR SLIDE SHOW
- One baby picture (or picture of your child as a youngster)
- One picture where your child is with a small group of classmates/friends (this picture could be of your child and his/her friends at any school age at a school function such as Prom, an athletic event, a curricular trip, etc.).
To submit these pictures, email them to dhsseniorslides@fargo.k12.nd.us. In the subject line of your email, write the names of the senior(s) in the picture in order from left to right. We would like all seniors represented in the slideshow, therefore listing the names ensures that we will not miss anyone. If the images do not follow these requirements, they will not be put in the slideshow. Furthermore, we ask that you only send the two pictures listed above. We do not need any senior pictures sent, as the yearbook has copies of those pictures. Please do not send developed pictures with your child to bring to the main office. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Main Office at 701-446-5605.
Thank you so much for your assistance in making the Davies 2023 graduation ceremony a memorable moment for our seniors for years to come.

BUS ROUTES
EARLY BUS RUNS Began Monday September 19th:
The following morning routes began 1st bus runs on Monday September 19th.
Students who need to meet with a teacher for Eagle Hour should be taking the early route that will arrive to school prior to Eagle beginning. Routes 104, 106, 108, 110, 114, 116, 120, 122, 132.
FPS DELAYED BUS ROUTE PLAN 2022-23
Last winter, Fargo Public Schools canceled several bus routes due to a shortage of bus drivers. This school year, to reduce bus route cancellations and to still provide transportation to school, FPS will run affected bus routes on a one-hour delay. School buildings will still start at their normal time; families are encouraged to transport their students on time, if possible. FPS realizes that not all families can transport their students if their bus route is canceled; instead, we will offer a one-hour delayed route. Affected students will not be counted tardy due to the delay. Please note that students will still receive their specialized instruction as indicated in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
If a driver shortage occurs, Valley Bus will notify affected riders of select routes by a voice call, email and/or text message to the contact information on file with the school. The message will instruct the rider that their original route pick-up time will run one hour late. An example would be if a student were to be picked up at 7:55 a.m. at 12th Ave. South and 7th Street, the new time would be 8:55 a.m.
Parents can check their child’s normal pick-up time using the “Bus Route by Address” option on the FPS Transportation website. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in PowerSchool.
