Mr. Ebeling's Updates

Navigating the C's TOGETHER

August Edition

Ramping up for a Great Beginning

The summer hasn't slowed down like I had originally asked it to! Being that it refuses to slow down, we might as well ride the wave and get ready for a GREAT start to the school year! As your Principal, I am humbled to be at a building that takes such pride in the work you do and the focus on student achievement! Your commitment to excellence is appreciated and honorable! We are going to have a great year, TOGETHER! I look forward to the journey!

Please contact me if there is anything you need. See you on Tuesday!

New Bay Harbor Staff Website

I have been working on a new website to act as a "one-stop-shop" for all staff to access any Bay Harbor information that you will need. Throughout the year, when I update the site with important information, I will send you an email with a link to the site. There are many things I need to still add and update.....it will be a process.

Check it out! It is password protected.

August Staff Meeting

Wednesday, Aug. 28th 2013 at 8:30-11:30am

1590 Harbor Lights Road

Suamico, WI

I am very excited to see you all TOGETHER next Wednesday. There is no doubt that this time of the year is a bit of a whirlwind, mixed with a tidal wave of change/expectations. Because of this, I want to make sure we take time to reflect on the reasons we do the job we do! Please be sure you bring your newly acquired technology as well as a picture or item that is special to you (this could be a memory as well).

Again, I am excited to set sail into a new year with you all! Make sure to read below and fill out the Crewmate form prior to our first staff meeting:)

As a reminder, the PTO will be providing Lunch after the meeting!!

Crewmate

As we continue to focus on "US" and being TOGETHER, we will form ourselves into Crews that are made up of 5-7 people. The Crew will be another way to stay connected and feel connected with Bay Harbor! Everybody needs to feel safe in order to take chances, excel and be productive. This will be another opportunity to build relationships beyond the grade level, etc.

crewmate [ˈkruːˌmeɪt]

n

(Transport / Nautical Terms) a colleague on the crew of a boat or ship

Thought You Should Know

1-1 Update

As you already know, ALL 4th graders will be provided an IPad for the 2013-2014 school year. Any additional technology will be distributed amongst classrooms. Kathleen and I will be meeting to talk more about this. Administration is continuing to meet regularly throughout the summer on the Roll-Out plan for student iPads.

REALLOCATION OF AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY

Now that there is more technology in 4th grade, the whole school will benefit from the reallocation of the rest of the technology available. I am working with Kathleen to figure out the amounts of available technology and will finalize classroom numbers asap so that you know what you will have for planning purposes.

Meet the Principal- School Beautification Event

Saturday, Aug. 17th 2013 at 9am-12pm

1590 Harbor Lights Road

Suamico, WI

In partnership with the PTO, the "Meet the Principal" school grounds beautification day was a HUGE success! We yanked out shrubs, put in a rock, grilled hot dogs, laid down 15 yards of mulch, transplanted plants and made the front of our school look like it should. Thank you to Jessica Clusman for her design work, Leslie Frank for her ability to get donations, and Melissa Chrisman for helping to pull it all together. Thank you also to the staff who came to help. The families and kids always like seeing the teachers at events. You are celebrities!

Next up, we will focus on other areas of the school landscape with the goal of having classrooms adopt areas to help make things look great, while turning it into an outdoor learning experience.

Phones

You may notice some new phones in your classrooms. These phones were installed over the summer and work through our data ports rather than a phone line. IT is working on some communication and user instructions for the fall. Until then, your old phones will remain in service as well.

Staff Meetings and PD

Starting this year, we will be having two staff/PD meetings each month. They will be held on the first and third Thursday's of the month. Open House

Open House will be from 4:30-6:00 on August 28th. Please DO NOT feel that your room needs to be neat and organized and completely ready by that time. I will be communicating that our school / rooms will be "under construction" until the day the students come in! Only be prepared to engage the students and families and have them leave smiling and feeling excited for the first day of school! Theme: Don't sweat the small stuff....KIDS matter!

Data Day

This year, due to budget adjustments (other known as MAJOR REDUCTION), we will not be providing subs for Running Records. Because of this, we will be doing a "Data Day" on September 9 for Grades 1-4. I met with the Service Team leaders (Mary Kiefer, Ann Van Egeren, Michele Otradovec) extensively to talk through some different options and feel that we came up with a fun and engaging way to do this.

Here is the detailed schedule:

Recess Before Lunch

NEW for 2013-2014 will be Recess before Lunch. This was highly recommended to me by the behavior team and is something I am excited about doing at BH. When I was at MacArthur Elementary School four years ago we began a Recess before Lunch plan. Though we had to do some problem solving, the outcome was Fantastic....kids ate and drank more, less recess problems with more time to deal with them, lunch room was quieter, and students entered the classroom READY to learn.

We will continue to work out details even into the first weeks of the year and make any necessary adjustments to make this successful for our students and our school. Teachers responsibility will be to walk the students to recess and then pick them up at the Lunch Room. To start the year, we may need more modeling on both ends, so feel free to add this to some of your teaching of procedures.
